I really enjoyed this one. The character arc for the main character is perfection, and there’s a pretty brutal moment near the end that had me nodding in serene understanding and going “Good for her.”

The use of indigenous magic and folklore is so beautifully done. The people and the world just come to life so well.

Now on to the sex. There’s a lot of it. It’s fun. But this is a DARK romance so please check the trigger warnings. If you’re a horror fan with a preference for werewolf movies, this is the book for you (though, they’re not werewolves, exactly). This book is VIOLENT and GORY and the main character goes through hell before she gets to the end.

Overall, this is an incredibly cathartic and healing book. Anyone who has been beat down by abusive people and needs a story of triumph and righteous indignation, please read this.

About a third of the way through, I honestly wasn’t sure if I could handle it, but I am SO glad I stuck with it. Xochitl’s character goes through such an internal journey, and comes out of it all a superhero.
