‘Where was it,’ Raskolnikov thought as he walked on, ‘where was it that I read about a man condemned to death saying or thinking, an hour before his death, that if he had to live somewhere high up on a cliffside, on a ledge so narrow that there was room only for his two feet—and with the abyss, the ocean, eternal darkness, eternal solitude, eternal storm all around him—and had to stay like that, on a square foot of space, an entire lifetime, a thousand years, an eternity—it would be better to live so than to die right now! Only to live, to live, to live! To live, no matter how—only to live!

And when the heart of a young woman experiences pity for someone, then, naturally, that's the most dangerous thing for her. She conceives at once a desire 'to save' him,

“He was so immersed in himself and had isolated himself so much from everyone that he was afraid not only of meeting his landlady but of meeting anyone at all”

Do you understand, sir, do you understand what it means when you have absolutely nowhere to turn?' Marmeladov's question came suddenly into his mind, for every man must have somewhere to turn'

Honoured sir,' he began almost with Solemnity, poverty is not a vice, that's a true saying. Yet I know too that drunkenness is not a virtue, and that that's even truer. But beggary, honoured sir, beggary is a vice. In poverty you may still retain your innate nobility of soul, but in beggary - never - no one.

“‘…and we shall fall at His feet and weep, and we shall understand all things.’”

I quote this not in support of this character claiming to represent women, but rather its truth with regard to humans generally

[I] finally brought into play the greatest and most reliable means of subjugating a woman's heart, which never disappoints anybody and always produces a decisive effect on every single woman, without exception. I mean, of course, flattery. There is nothing in the world harder than straightforwardness, and nothing easier than flattery. In straightforward dealing, if there is one-hundredth part of a false note, the result is immediate dissonance and, in consequence, trouble. But in flattery every single note can be false and the effect will be agreeable, and it will be listened to with some pleasure; the pleasure may indeed be somewhat crude, but it is still pleasure, for all that. And, however gross the flattery may be, at least half of it will certainly seem to be true. This holds for every stage of development and every social level. Even a vestal virgin can be seduced by flattery, not to mention ordinary people. I can't help laughing when I remember how I once seduced a lady who was devoted to her husband, to her children, and to virtue. What fun it was, and how little trouble! And the lady really was virtuous, in her own way at least. My whole strategy consisted in being crushed and prostrate before her chastity the whole time. I flattered her unconscionably…”

But then why, he had always wondered afterwards, why should he have had an encounter which was at one and the same time of such important, decisive consequence for him, and of such fortuitous nature in the Haymarket of all places (where he had not even any reason to be), and why should it have occurred at precisely that that hour, that minute of his life, coinciding with precisely that colouring of his mood and with precisely those circumstances which made it quite inevitable that it, that encounter, should produce the most devastating and lasting influence on his entire personal fate?

There are chance meetings with strangers that interest us from the first moment, before a word is spoken.

Man grows used to everything, the scoundrel!

What if man is not really a scoundrel -man in general, I mean, the whole race of mankind - then all the rest is prejudice, simply artificial terrors and there are no barriers and it's all as it should be.

Crimă și pedeapsă

Karpe Diez

This is a crime for which punishment begins way before it is committed. The motive is never clearly laid down - not even by the main character. Most of us are bound to obey rules. To some, though, under the sign of genius, anything is allowed - if it opens possibilities for building greatness. But the constant self-tormenting in the face of the criminal act is the negation of genius - as there should be no doubt of legitimacy when committing such an act.

This was phenomenal. Beautiful. I feel this book would've been 4 pages long if Raskolnikov got some bitches on his dick at the start ngl

Delitto e Castigo

The first book that made me feel emotion I wasn't expecting to feel. I couldn't sleep, I felt guilty every night. It's tough, but once you go through it you can't never be the same and you'll be inevitably better.

Crimen Y Castigo

Dani

Una descripción impecable y profunda de la psicología de los personajes, en especial del protagonista. Una obra filosófica con personajes muy humanos y reales en la que se estudia la evolución del personaje tras un crimen.

Elda Mengisto

"Crime? What crime...I killed a vile, pernicious louse, a little old money-lending crone who was of no use to anyone, to kill whom is worth forty sins forgiven, who sucked the life-sap from the poor--is that a crime? I'm not thinking of it, nor am I thinking of washing it away" (518). Crime and Punishment is exactly what it says on the tin--it starts with the crime (a murder), followed by the punishment as a result. The story focuses on Rodion Raskolnikov--a university student who has little money and lives in a shoddy apartment. After a pawning for his watch goes awry, he goes and kills the old lady and steals from her (which is part 1). The remaining five parts features an investigation of sorts, but primarily focuses on how Raskolnikov deals with the fallout of his deed, along with an analysis of the society in which allows him to do such things. As I started to read this, I'm actually surprised on how easily the writing comes through. I didn't have a hard time reading Part 1, but it might be because it follows a simple line of what led to Raskolnikov to murdering Alyona Ivanova and her sister, Lizaveta. The consequences begin almost right away, as "He was hardly aware of himself now, and the farther he went the worse it became." (86). While he dodges the law through the facade he puts up, it doesn't mean that he fully escaped. One of the more interesting scenes from the book featured Razumikhin discussing the origins of crime, and railing against how criminals are "victims of circumstances". Raskolnikov, citing his article, argues that great men would have to do something illegal at some point. This also features Napoleon, who Raskolnikov looks up to. Thinking about it, to commit a crime to prove one as "superior" reeks of entitlement, in comparison to Raskolnikov's status as an impoverished student. The imagery of Raskolnikov's apartment throughout features a torn-apart space, with his landlord Nastsya taking care of him and bringing bad food. It's also amplified by how Raskolnikov works to make his mother's and sister Dunya's sacrifices worthwhile--at one point, he gets stressed when he finds out of Dunya's anticipated nuptials. Considering his intelligence, could've he found another way to succeed in Dostoyevsky's Saint Petersburg? Which leads to the most poignant scenes in the book--where Raskolnikov and Sonya meet up. One of them features on how Sonya encourages the former to confess his crimes, and he kisses the floor, in which he announces, "I was not bowing to you, I was bowing to all of human suffering" (322). I found that particularly strong, because it reflected the main themes of the book and how we could get ourselves in trouble because of it. Later, he tells Sonya, "...you are a sinner because you destroyed yourself and betrayed yourself in vain" (322). This is a prominent line in it also reflects what humanity has done to themselves--and Sonya as she draws herself into prostitution. The scene where he confesses is also carthatic, as Sonya almost naively promises ot support him. Reading Crime and Punishment, I focused a lot on Raskolnikov's passion--where he is tormented in dreams and with his interactions with other people. Admittedly, I didn't focus on how much society has to play in this--I read in spirts and fits; the long paragraphs also didn't help. I did get the feeling of darkness; even the hard labor Raskolnikov goes to in the end was easier for it helps him heal. Based on his love for Sonya, it almost feels like a happy ending. Crime and Punishment was quite interesting--it was not what I had expected (especially when murder is involved), but it is still quite deep. Dostoyevsky had a way with words, but also pulls my strings in terms of character interactions and analysis. However, it may take a second reading before i could appreciate all of it...(7.5/10)

A mentally ill man gets an idea in his head that he can just go and ahead and commit murder, and then proceeds to suffer the consequences of his actions. Enjoyed the glimpse we get in the everyday life, back alleys, and taverns around the time the book was written. All the characters were lively and really fleshed out as well. Overall I can’t say I wasn’t bored at times reading this and that it didn’t take me a good while to finish because of that, but glad I pushed through and finished.

Crime and Punishment is a novel by the Russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky. It was first published in the literary journal The Russian Messenger in twelve monthly installments during 1866. It was later published in a single volume. It is the second of Dostoyevsky's full-length novels following his return from 10 years of exile in Siberia. Crime and Punishment is considered the first great novel of his "mature" period of writing. Crime and Punishment focuses on the mental anguish and moral dilemmas of Rodion Raskolnikov, an impoverished ex-student in St. Petersburg who formulates and executes a plan to kill an unscrupulous pawnbroker for her cash. Raskolnikov, in attempts to defend his actions, argues that with the pawnbroker's money he can perform good deeds to counterbalance the crime, while ridding the world of a vermin. He also commits the murder to test a theory of his that dictates some people are naturally capable of such actions, and even have the right to perform them. Several times throughout the novel, Raskolnikov compares himself with Napoleon Bonaparte and shares his belief that murder is permissible in pursuit of a higher purpose.

Raskolnikov, a destitute and desperate former student, wanders through the slums of St Petersburg and commits a random murder without remorse or regret. He imagines himself to be a great man, a Napoleon: acting for a higher purpose beyond conventional moral law. But as he embarks on a dangerous game of cat and mouse with a suspicious police investigator, Raskolnikov is pursued by the growing voice of his conscience and finds the noose of his own guilt tightening around his neck. Only Sonya, a downtrodden prostitute, can offer the chance of redemption.

Absolute masterpiece. I'm not used to read Russian Literature, but after finishing this book I presume I've grown more interested in other works.

A lot to think about, much much thinking required, but quite interesting, several ideas lay under the story.

I know this called a classic book for a reason. It's too beating around the bush, instead of focusing on the main crime. I feel like the crime part was just a side story, meanwhile the main plot was the family drama. But I must say that Dostoevsky's writing was beyond magical. I mean, this is such a boring plot, honestly, but how could he write a mainstream storyline into a masterpiece like this?? I said mainstream because the plot was easy to predict so I skimmed while reading it (it's because of the countless of unnecessary dialogues and parts too..)

A masterpiece about a man who thinks and decides and acts and faces the consequences of his decisions. But that's not really all there is to it. The story is much deeper.

I lied. There will be no review. To consign myself is to impose a finality to my raving thoughts and feelings for this book. Words are not sufficient enough to convey how powerful, profound, disturbing, and beautiful this book is. Crime and punishment is something else... Highly recommended.

One of, if not the most devastating and unforgiving books I've ever read. The characters & setting shine through with liveliness and clarity, which makes the plot even more crushing to me. I'd confidently recommend this book to anyone who really loves literature and storytelling. There aren't many books I've read that so faithfully capture the human spirit and so deeply reflect the human experience.

The conclusion is difficult for me to accept because I don't really agree with it. That doesn't make it bad, but I'm still taking off half a star because I'm biased and petty.

A couple of times I wondered what purpose a particular “scene” served, but it wasn’t a bad thing. Liked the redemptive ending.

Oh, if someone were to ask what my favourite books are, I would mention this one on my long list, though embarrassed how basic my taste may come accross. But it’s fine. This book is so loved for a reason. You must read it. Easy to read, full of twists and will make you root for a killer.

A remarkable masterpiece of Dostoyevsky in the world of Russian's fiction. It captivates the crime and psychological tensions of life. It is a tragic tale of a protagonist Raskolnikov, who puts his philosophical theories to the trial of murder eventually. He is incapable to understand the feelings of love and commiseration because he regards himself as a pariah. Mesmerizing!

Crime and Punishment (Amazonclassics Edition)

One of the most striking elements of Dostoevsky’s writing is how he weaves dreams into his narratives, portraying them as reflections of real life and signs that his characters cannot ignore. In this way, dreams become more than mere fantasy—they are meaningful and deeply connected to the characters’ journeys, mirroring the inevitable suffering and moral dilemmas that shape their lives. It’s clear that Dostoevsky resonated deeply with this connection between life and dreams, perhaps influenced by his own experiences. In

, the theme of suffering is especially powerful, seen most intensely in Raskolnikov’s inner torment and moral struggle. His descent into guilt and self-loathing is gripping, as he wrestles with the consequences of his actions. The novel is both intense and thrilling, particularly during its climactic chapters. Dostoevsky intertwines philosophical and spiritual exploration in a way. The stories linger in my mind, as does the novel’s exploration of redemption and the moral complexities of the human soul.
