"Crime? What crime...I killed a vile, pernicious louse, a little old money-lending crone who was of no use to anyone, to kill whom is worth forty sins forgiven, who sucked the life-sap from the poor--is that a crime? I'm not thinking of it, nor am I thinking of washing it away" (518). Crime and Punishment is exactly what it says on the tin--it starts with the crime (a murder), followed by the punishment as a result. The story focuses on Rodion Raskolnikov--a university student who has little money and lives in a shoddy apartment. After a pawning for his watch goes awry, he goes and kills the old lady and steals from her (which is part 1). The remaining five parts features an investigation of sorts, but primarily focuses on how Raskolnikov deals with the fallout of his deed, along with an analysis of the society in which allows him to do such things. As I started to read this, I'm actually surprised on how easily the writing comes through. I didn't have a hard time reading Part 1, but it might be because it follows a simple line of what led to Raskolnikov to murdering Alyona Ivanova and her sister, Lizaveta. The consequences begin almost right away, as "He was hardly aware of himself now, and the farther he went the worse it became." (86). While he dodges the law through the facade he puts up, it doesn't mean that he fully escaped. One of the more interesting scenes from the book featured Razumikhin discussing the origins of crime, and railing against how criminals are "victims of circumstances". Raskolnikov, citing his article, argues that great men would have to do something illegal at some point. This also features Napoleon, who Raskolnikov looks up to. Thinking about it, to commit a crime to prove one as "superior" reeks of entitlement, in comparison to Raskolnikov's status as an impoverished student. The imagery of Raskolnikov's apartment throughout features a torn-apart space, with his landlord Nastsya taking care of him and bringing bad food. It's also amplified by how Raskolnikov works to make his mother's and sister Dunya's sacrifices worthwhile--at one point, he gets stressed when he finds out of Dunya's anticipated nuptials. Considering his intelligence, could've he found another way to succeed in Dostoyevsky's Saint Petersburg? Which leads to the most poignant scenes in the book--where Raskolnikov and Sonya meet up. One of them features on how Sonya encourages the former to confess his crimes, and he kisses the floor, in which he announces, "I was not bowing to you, I was bowing to all of human suffering" (322). I found that particularly strong, because it reflected the main themes of the book and how we could get ourselves in trouble because of it. Later, he tells Sonya, "...you are a sinner because you destroyed yourself and betrayed yourself in vain" (322). This is a prominent line in it also reflects what humanity has done to themselves--and Sonya as she draws herself into prostitution. The scene where he confesses is also carthatic, as Sonya almost naively promises ot support him. Reading Crime and Punishment, I focused a lot on Raskolnikov's passion--where he is tormented in dreams and with his interactions with other people. Admittedly, I didn't focus on how much society has to play in this--I read in spirts and fits; the long paragraphs also didn't help. I did get the feeling of darkness; even the hard labor Raskolnikov goes to in the end was easier for it helps him heal. Based on his love for Sonya, it almost feels like a happy ending. Crime and Punishment was quite interesting--it was not what I had expected (especially when murder is involved), but it is still quite deep. Dostoyevsky had a way with words, but also pulls my strings in terms of character interactions and analysis. However, it may take a second reading before i could appreciate all of it...(7.5/10)

A mentally ill man gets an idea in his head that he can just go and ahead and commit murder, and then proceeds to suffer the consequences of his actions. Enjoyed the glimpse we get in the everyday life, back alleys, and taverns around the time the book was written. All the characters were lively and really fleshed out as well. Overall I can’t say I wasn’t bored at times reading this and that it didn’t take me a good while to finish because of that, but glad I pushed through and finished.

Crime and Punishment is a novel by the Russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky. It was first published in the literary journal The Russian Messenger in twelve monthly installments during 1866. It was later published in a single volume. It is the second of Dostoyevsky's full-length novels following his return from 10 years of exile in Siberia. Crime and Punishment is considered the first great novel of his "mature" period of writing. Crime and Punishment focuses on the mental anguish and moral dilemmas of Rodion Raskolnikov, an impoverished ex-student in St. Petersburg who formulates and executes a plan to kill an unscrupulous pawnbroker for her cash. Raskolnikov, in attempts to defend his actions, argues that with the pawnbroker's money he can perform good deeds to counterbalance the crime, while ridding the world of a vermin. He also commits the murder to test a theory of his that dictates some people are naturally capable of such actions, and even have the right to perform them. Several times throughout the novel, Raskolnikov compares himself with Napoleon Bonaparte and shares his belief that murder is permissible in pursuit of a higher purpose.

Raskolnikov, a destitute and desperate former student, wanders through the slums of St Petersburg and commits a random murder without remorse or regret. He imagines himself to be a great man, a Napoleon: acting for a higher purpose beyond conventional moral law. But as he embarks on a dangerous game of cat and mouse with a suspicious police investigator, Raskolnikov is pursued by the growing voice of his conscience and finds the noose of his own guilt tightening around his neck. Only Sonya, a downtrodden prostitute, can offer the chance of redemption.
This vivid translation by David McDuff has been acclaimed as the most accessible version of Dostoyevsky’s great novel, rendering its dialogue with a unique force and naturalism. This edition also includes a new chronology of Dostoyevsky’s life and work.

Absolute masterpiece. I'm not used to read Russian Literature, but after finishing this book I presume I've grown more interested in other works.

A lot to think about, much much thinking required, but quite interesting, several ideas lay under the story.

I know this called a classic book for a reason. It's too beating around the bush, instead of focusing on the main crime. I feel like the crime part was just a side story, meanwhile the main plot was the family drama. But I must say that Dostoevsky's writing was beyond magical. I mean, this is such a boring plot, honestly, but how could he write a mainstream storyline into a masterpiece like this?? I said mainstream because the plot was easy to predict so I skimmed while reading it (it's because of the countless of unnecessary dialogues and parts too..) 

A masterpiece about a man who thinks and decides and acts and faces the consequences of his decisions. But that's not really all there is to it. The story is much deeper.

One of, if not the most devastating and unforgiving books I've ever read. The characters & setting shine through with liveliness and clarity, which makes the plot even more crushing to me. I'd confidently recommend this book to anyone who really loves literature and storytelling. There aren't many books I've read that so faithfully capture the human spirit and so deeply reflect the human experience.

A couple of times I wondered what purpose a particular “scene” served, but it wasn’t a bad thing. Liked the redemptive ending.

Oh, if someone were to ask what my favourite books are, I would mention this one on my long list, though embarrassed how basic my taste may come accross. But it’s fine. This book is so loved for a reason. You must read it. Easy to read, full of twists and will make you root for a killer.
