Berkisah tentang Tenma, seorang dokter muda jenius asal Jepang yang bertugas di satu rumah sakit di Jerman Barat. Kisahnya dimulai ketika ada dua orang anak menteri asal Jerman Timur yang harus dirawat di rumah sakit karena keluarganya ditembak mati. Dr. Tenma harus mengoperasi seorang anak laki-laki yang kritis karena terkena tembakan di kepalanya. Masalah muncul bertahun-tahun kemudian ketika terbukti ternyata sang anak -yang telah diselamatkannya dan kini sudah dewasa- merencanakan sesuatu yang membuat banyak orang terbunuh. Seiring perjalanannya untuk mencegah semakin banyaknya pembunuhan yang dilakukan oleh anak ini, Dr. Tenma menguak siapa sebenarnya si anak berikut asal-usulnya.

this got perilously close to a flawless 5/5 for me but i think, unfortunately, there are just a couple too many wobbles toward the end for me. nevertheless, this was one of the best written thrillers that i've experienced in any medium, with convincing characters, plotting and carefully ratcheted tension. the real magic trick with thriller writing is knowing when to squeeze a reader and when to release and the story here is so long that there's a lot of squeezing but every release is perfectly judged. the art style is gorgeous too. love how focussed this story is despite the scope broadening little by little every volume until it's more-or-less an ensemble drama toward the end. incredibly worthwhile reading experience.
