I was very iffy on this book for the first 150 or so pages. It read like a kind of sleepy British countryside novel that was pleasantly enough written but wasn't actually interesting or relevant to me. But finally, it picked up a bit, and I began to be more invested in the characters. In the end, I wound up liking it quite a lot. I'm not wholly convinced that the resolution of the problematic fraternal relationship makes a lot of sense, but so much else in the book wound up being so nicely rendered that I was able to look past it. If the book hadn't had such a sluggish start (and perhaps if it hadn't overused the word "warble" by maybe four instances too many), I'd feel pretty good about the four stars I've given it; with the things that bugged me, it's really maybe a 3.6.
