Nic Sheff

Tweak: Growing Up On Methamphetamines

Very moving and understanding, made me tear. I like when there’s references to other media so I can immerse myself into that situation/moment.

This is the second time I am reading Tweak, and it really opened up my eyes in different ways than last time. The first time I read this book was in high school and I was 17 years old working with kids. I have never been around drugs or people who are struggling with addiction and this book changed my thoughts from my naivety. Now, rereading it at 22 living by myself and working in a pharmacy, I feel like I can understand life and Nic’s point of view more.
I have never been the reader who writes or tabs her books, I just never saw the point or urge of it. However, rereading Tweak today, I found myself wanting to remember certain lines and mark Nic Sheff’s words with something to really show that I understand and its important. Its 11:06pm and I just finished it for the second time, and I can confidently say that I cried both times. I recommend this book more than any other book, however, please be aware that Nic Sheff goes into incredible detail and that can be triggering to some. 12/10, deserves more that a simple rating.

Sheff relates his personal struggle with drugs and alcohol in this poignant and often disturbing memoir. Paul Michael Garcia is the perfect choice for narrator; his stern and entirely believable voice captures the desolation in Sheff's tale. His reading is wonderfully underplayed, and necessarily so. Garcia becomes Sheff, offering a gritty and raw performance that demonstrates just how dire the circumstances surrounding Sheff's existence really were.

The story that inspired the major motion picture Beautiful Boy featuring Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamet. This New York Times bestselling memoir of a young man’s addiction to methamphetamine tells a raw, harrowing, and ultimately hopeful tale of the road from relapse to recovery. Nic Sheff was drunk for the first time at age eleven. In the years that followed, he would regularly smoke pot, do cocaine and Ecstasy, and develop addictions to crystal meth and heroin. Even so, he felt like he would always be able to quit and put his life together whenever he needed to. It took a violent relapse one summer in California to convince him otherwise. In a voice that is raw and honest, Nic spares no detail in telling us the compelling, heartbreaking, and true story of his relapse and the road to recovery. As we watch Nic plunge into the mental and physical depths of drug addiction, he paints a picture for us of a person at odds with his past, with his family, with his substances, and with himself. It's a harrowing portrait—but not one without hope.
