The Middle Ages have be seen as a time of hardship and oppression, full of popes and crusades. In the second volume of 2,000 Years, another side of the Middle Ages shines through. This was far from a period of stagnation; rather it was the fire from which the Reformation was kindled.

This is a great volume for someone (like me!) who wants to get his bearings in the Middle Ages for further detailed study. It isn’t excessively detailed, so you can get the highlights over vast periods of time quite easily. My knowledge of the Eastern church especially was pretty thin, so the attention that they get in the book was good for getting, um, Oriented.

Each chapter ends with a smattering of excerpts from some of the primary sources discussed in that chapter, e.g., an eyewitness account of a crusade, or a papal bull. In some periods of church history, this is a bit like eating from a mixed bag of salty nuts, but it was nice to have some of these characters speak for themselves.

Always a pleasure to watch David’s Lord shatter his enemies.
