I've had this book on my night stand for awhile, but not because I didn't enjoy it! I think Jason Segal's story is very imaginative. A boy named Charlie gets stuck in the world of nightmares where he and his friends have to face their worst fears. The book is more funny than scary and has really nice illustrations, too.

Let's talk about what I didn't like first. The storytelling here was great in the sense of plot. I knew who the villain was the second he was mentioned. I knew Charlie's true fear, the moment it was mentioned. There were few surprises in the direction of that plot. That being said, the undertones of this book were amazing.

The themes are what stood out to me. How our nightmares are there to help us. They're not actually the thing we're afraid of, but rather a reflection of it that is there to help us get over our fears. This bit was just brilliant. I loved it.

The artwork in this book ties in well with the plot and is quite beautiful. 

I liked the worldbuilding. The different types of monsters, new and old, were fun to read about. 

Overall it was an enjoyable story. I doubt it would be as predictable if I was in the target audience age range so, I take that into consideration.

Only by finding the courage to face their deepest, darkest fears can Charlie and his friends conquer the creatures of the night and save the day.

Wow! I LOVED IT! It's an amazing middlegrade novel with beautiful pictures in it. The story itself is very interesting and gripping. I think it's a perfect read for children and for adults as well. It teaches you a couple of things. 
I'm really looking forward for the second book.

Half of the book was great.
But the main character in the beginning, he is just being mean and kind of nasty. For me, he is unlikeable. I don’t mind a character being mean, being shitty, flawed. In fact, I found a soft spot for MC that is flawed. But this kid is really getting on my nerve. I get it why he is being like that though, but I don’t know why this time, I just couldn’t. BUT! Thankfully we get to see the character building on his character.

Another thing that did not fit with me is the main part of the nightmares itself. I thought the concept was unique but it was too much for me.

2.5 stars for the lovely lovely ending, the other support characters, and the spooky atmosphere.
