Vane swirls the last of the liquor in the glass, then slings it back and sets the glass on the desk. He comes over to me, takes my hand, and bends to his knees. He plants a chaste kiss on the rise of my knuckles and says, “As the queen commands it.”

‘There is no way to measure love, but if there were, I know I would be full.’

“Do not pretend like a man has no right to his tears.”

“I’m sorry, Tinker Bell. I’m sorry we loved each other so much we destroyed one another.”

‘The Dark One has done many dark things.’

He sighs and looks away. “I loved how she made me feel.” 

“Let me rephrase that.” He meets my gaze again. “I loved that for a moment, with her, I could pretend I could feel.” There is sorrow on his face now, a wrinkle between his dark brows.

“Yes, but time means nothing to heartbreak.”

“I never want to grow up,” I told Tink.

Vane steps in front of me. “When you feel the shadow take over...” 

Vane bends to my level. “When you feel the shadow fighting you, eyes on me.” I meet his gaze, his black eye, his violet one. He’s searching me, fine lines appearing around his eyes as his concern grows.

Sobbing happy tears 🥹☺️✨🫶🏼

“I can feel it,” he says, a soft utterance, a quiet secret.

“Your love,” he says. “In my chest.” He kisses my cheek, lingering close. “I can feel your love like a million golden stars in the endless abyss that is me.” His words hit me in the gut and wings fill my insides. I clench my teeth, trying not to cry, but it’s too late. Vane looks down at me, swiping the tear away, and I lean into his hand as the trembling subsides.

“Promise me you will always be there.” 

He tilts me up to him and kisses me gently. “I promise, Win.”

“There was a time I wanted you to run faster, so you could escape me. 

But I don’t think there was any stretch of land vast enough that would have stopped me.”

“You’re no longer chasing me, and I’m no longer running.”

“I don’t like it when you call me that.” He looks up, his violet eye bright, rising to the challenge in my voice. 

“Because calling me Win is something the rest of them don’t.” 

“You want us to be special, do you, Darling?”

‘If she shows no emotion and wears her determination like armor, she will be stronger. No one can hurt her. 

How utterly alone she must feel. How heartbreaking that is.’

“Because I’m a possessive prick,” I tell her. “I don’t even have to like the thing. Or the girl, as the case may be. What’s mine is mine, and once it’s mine, it cannot be someone else’s.”

“If you care for very little, you have very little to lose.”

‘Drenched in darkness, terrified of light.’

‘She is the same age she was when I killed her, immortal and ageless, more beautiful than any corpse has a right to be.’

honestly I almost dnfed it bc it was too slow at one point…

Such a good ending and I loved learning more about the characters

This was such a good way to end this series. I loved every second of reading these books. I took the long route and had to wait after the third book’s cliffhanger but it was worth it. The characters were just so good. Everything came together full circle so well. The whole series was fast-paced, spicy, and overall super entertaining. I can’t wait to read more by Nikki St. Crowe in the future!

Is it terrible that I’m disappointed that this book wasn’t nearly as smutty as the first three? This final book felt a little… tame?! 

I am intrigued by the spin off series with Roc though. That should be interesting and I really am a sucker for MMF.

I can’t recall how I found out about the never king. I bought the first couple books to give it a go and was hooked from the beginning. It’s been such an amazing story and I loved every moment of it. I don’t want to go to into detail about the specifics. Just buy it and enjoy. I can’t wait to read the series again.
