Picked this up after reading Inheritance because the hardcover was half off at B&N and who can resist that?? Not me, that’s for sure. 

This brings me to a whopping total of 2 Nora Robert’s books read, which isn’t even a tiny dent in her humongous oeuvre, but i’m definitely picking up on her formula. And, hey, I see why it works! 

This book is a thriller but with extremely low stakes. We all know there’s a happy ending coming, so it makes the tension much more bearable. That being said, after lots of buildup the main action is over very quickly, which was a little unsatisfying for me. I’m a big horror fan though so doom and gloom are right up my alley (although that also makes these great palate cleansers when i’ve just read something quite heavy). 

And of course there is a romance, that much like the thriller aspect, is the lowest of stakes. There is no pining or miscommunication or angst and again, HEA guaranteed. All of that would make the payoff much greater but these never claim to be the next great love story and they deliver exactly what you would expect. 

One thing I’ve noticed is that the dialogue in both books i’ve read is very similar, which makes the characters feel cut and pasted and not unique. That’s a downside to finding a niche that works and could get old after a while. 

Overall, an enjoyable, quick read and a good start to the new year :)

Morgan Albright has spent the last few years working toward her goals, and they are finally in sight when the man she has been seeing steals her identity and kills her roommate.  Devastated over the loss of her friend and dealing with mountains of debt, Morgan sells her dream house and goes home to Vermont to move in with her mother and grandmother.  Morgan doesn't think she will ever be happy again, especially when FBI agents inform her that her identity thief is also a psychopathic serial killer that will, at some point, try to kill her.  However, she discovers that with hard work and some help from others, she might just find happiness after all.

Identity hooks the reader right from the start with a brutal murder and the timely topic of identity theft.  As always with Nora Roberts' books, the characters, including their professions, are well developed, and the setting is a wonderful place where many would want to live.  The suspense aspect of the story is woven throughout the book as the killer's perspective is often provided, but the romance doesn't really get going until about half way through.  The book does slow down a bit in the middle and some of the characters voices sound very similar, but overall, Identity is another entertaining read from Nora Roberts.
