A VERY solid 4 stars.

I originally brought this home for my wife because she was needing some poetic material to read to someone. I really hesitated, and was correct -- there is straight poetry, free verse, stories and conversations in this book. Plus, there were different media included -- drawings, photographs, paintings, graphic art and graphic novel formats. I doubt she read it for five minutes. Not her fault -- she likes her items -- poetry in particular, to be in a straight, "normal" format. Nothing wrong with that.

But the variety interested me. I probably wouldn't have considered it if I hadn't flipped through the pages. 

I figured I would have a few favorites, or several favorites. There is something important in every entry.

There are some very powerful stories in this book. There is a lot of sadness among these Indigenous women of North America. It's like with every race -- it's hard to believe that this pain goes on and leads to all types of substance abuse, as well as abuse they have had done to themselves. But so many in this book have come out of these trials so much better people. I think it would be a great book for people with a strong interest in Indigenous people and in social justice issues.

I really wanted to love this book. So many aspects of the book speak positively and fill a long neglected gap in telling the authentic stories of Native American women. However, the book lacked a coherent organization, a greater purpose to the compilation that would use the order and design to tell that much needed story.
I still, despite that one criticism, think that everyone should read this. We need more of this. People need to tell their stories and others must listen.
