these unique poems about love, family, belonging, self-discovery, and mourning were all definitely very personal but somehow they also felt universal and timeless. this book told ocean vuong's story and yet, so many lines (the famous "The most beautiful part of your body is where it's headed", but also "I hold the gun and wonder if an entry wound in the night would make a hole wide in the morning", "You will always remember what you were doing when it hurts the most. There is so much I need to tell you- but I only earned one life. & I took nothing. Nothing.", "Sometimes I ask for too much just to feel my mouth overflow" and "Your father is only your father until one of you forgets") resonated with me when i first read this at 14, and still do now that i'm 18. some of my favorites were Anaphora as coping mechanism, A little closer to the edge, Telemachus, Prayer for the newly damned, Always & Forever and My father writes from prison.
