Of Mice and Men is a 1937 novella written by American author John Steinbeck. It describes the experiences of George Milton and Lennie Small, two displaced migrant ranch workers, as they move from place to place in California, searching for jobs during the Great Depression.

I was forced to read this for school and found myself loving it. I enjoyed the depth of characters, the way that society and societal issues were shown, and over all the way the story progressed. 

The relationship between brothers was truly heart warming up until the end. I was blown away by the ending and the choice he made, Part of me understands why he chose to shoot Lennie but at the exact same time because what if things had been different? I was told the ending was comprable to the trolley problem and I disagree, I feel there were so many options and the choice that George made was one of the worst ones. I could also be high;y biased because Lennie was my goat but I find so many scenarios where something different could have happened and they could have followed what they had planned originally. I will agree that what Lennie did was wrong but I have a big soft spot for him so I feel that what George did was deeply wrong.

I honestly think I would read this book again which is rare especially because of how I feel about the ending, I find myself wanting to read through the story again and see if I maybe have a different opinion with a fresh prospective.

This one is for pet lovers. Touching prose. Very Sentimental. Taking care of companions in a harsh world. I loved how the book captures the simplicity of caring for a pet. Responsibility of dependents. Innocent drive of caring crossing the line to smothering. What we do when something is past its prime, injured. The thin line of labouring making a purpose and mutual care. The mirroring fate of the mice and dogs and Lennie is a bit predictable but still sad and touching ending. The themes are still very true today. George and Lenny’s dreams and could be copy paste of today.

Very good quick read. Felt like the plot jumped very quickly despite Steinbeck’s persistent vivid detail. Enjoyed very much this second time around

Because Lennie can never pass from his state of innocence, he must be destroyed. Lennie represents that part in George, possibly in everyone, that remains childlike. It is important that George, himself, must destroy Lennie and that Lennie literally dies with the dream. Before his death, Lennie repeats the dream like a catechism and urges George, “Le’s do it now,” after which George pulls the trigger. Lennie dies with the dream. Lennie becomes a metaphor for the death of innocence within a selfish society that cannot comprehend him or his relationship with George. To illustrate this point, Steinbeck allows the character Carlson the final word, “Now what the hell ya suppose is eatin’ them two guys?” Carlson embodies an apathetic society that cannot understand a relationship based upon trust and love rather than avarice. Carlson insists upon killing Candy’s dog because “He don’t have no fun.” Like the society he epitomizes, all of Carlson’s judgments deal in the superficial. For Steinbeck, that is a world that cannot sustain innocence.

such an easy and quick read when I didn’t expect it to be. Can certainly feel the impending doom at times, but in a good foreshadowing way, not a predictable way. really loved this book actually.

A short novella that plays out more like an American fable. I couldn't help but view Steinbeck's tale through a disability lens, which enriched my experience as much as it saddened it. It's a window into the past, but only just. The types of cultural and societal attitudes towards Lennie throughout the story are very much present today, and often produce similar effects; folks with intellectual and developmental disabilities are at disproportionately higher risk for abuse, neglect, financial exploitation and police violence. I don't necessarily think Steinbeck set out to comment specifically on the way the illusion of the American Dream willfully ignores the existence of disability (or shuns it outright), but it's there all the same. I have personal stake in the topic, so I gravitated towards this reading of the story. Others, as I have seen, sometimes take entirely different things from it. Sorry to my high school English teacher for lying that I read this! I completed any and all assignments relating to this book with the help of SparkNotes. I wouldn't have liked it half as much as I do now, anyways.

This story is very well written. The character development done by the author is amazing. The themes of loneliness, ambition and nature of a dream are well portrayed.  The ending made me bawl my eyes out 😭

I absolutely adored this book. I did cry at the end though. WHY LENNIE WHY? I loved the plot and the impossibility of the dream and the characters and how LENNIE MEANT NO HARM. It is safe to say I was bawling at the end of the book. This is one of the few classics that I loved.

I decided to read this again for the last day of March! “Of Mice and Men” is very close to my heart. 4 years ago, I picked this book up, not knowing anything about the author and the story itself. But what I also didn’t know at the time is that this is THE book that will make me get back into reading again, plus, it’s the first classic I have ever read (as I know of).

I love this book no matter what anyone says and for that, I reread it whenever I can. It’s short, but dark, with themes of the American dream, race, and the working class. In my opinion, it’s definitely not one of those books that you can speed through. I recommend that you take your time to contemplate exactly what the author was thinking.

This novella is heartbreaking, all right. What really struck me is not any exquisite writing, but the fear of impending doom that urged me to read more. Before dark things actually happened, I could get a sense of it, a tingling in the back of my neck. I had to move forward, to confirm what I knew was going to be true. Yes, it's depressing and heartbreaking. But in the end, mixed with a sense of emptiness, is a feeling of relief that the ending was better than it could have been.
