Susan Sontag

First published in 1973, this is a study of the force of photographic images which are continually inserted between experience and reality. Sontag develops further the concept of transparency. When anything can be photographed and photography has destroyed the boundaries and definitions of art, a viewer can approach a photography freely with no expectations of discovering what it means. This collection of six lucid essays, the most famous being Plato's Cave make up a deep exploration of how the image has affected society.

Winner of the National Book Critics' Circle Award for Criticism. One of the most highly regarded books of its kind, Susan Sontag's On Photography first appeared in 1977 and is described by its author as "a progress of essays about the meaning and career of photographs." It begins with the famous "In Plato's Cave"essay, then offers five other prose meditations on this topic, and concludes with a fascinating and far-reaching "Brief Anthology of Quotations."

The photograph as surreal, art, not art, proof of existence. Sontag manages to explain in practically philosophical language what a photograph is, has been, and in some ways is becoming even in the modern day. Written in an authoritative, yes philosophical and erudite way. She is like the philosopher of photography. My one grudge is that there are photographers mentioned ad nauseam, but not photos or examples, which makes it difficult if you are not familiar with these works. I have to say I'd like to be more familiar with photograph in general, so perhaps this wasn't the best place to start if you won't understand some of the many references without looking them up.

unbelievably delighted to be able to say that i have finally read the entirety of on photography! every book a person reads influences who they are, but so few have as immediate and direct impact on how you 'see' (literally!) the world as this charismatically-written collection of essays and quotations. this is simply the most transformative required reading i have ever had and i will adore sontag (and ulit) forever.

For something that is always listed and talked about as THE book about photography that every photographer needs to read, Sontag seems to be dripping in disdain for photography. She comes off as very pretentious, very hateful of photography as an art or otherwise, and ultimately as the book goes one she seems to spend more time talking in circles than anything else. 

The one positive thing this book gave me was the ability to think about my own photography, what it means to me and how photography impacts me... what it's real value is, and better understand just why I love it so much. Even if it was only revealed due to how much she seems to think otherwise.
