This was why Dimitri hadn’t left him a note.

In truth, the man called Koschei was waiting to be impressed by something; to feel something other than numbness in his veins. He waited and waited to be moved but, for years, he felt nothing.

why were the characters kind of insufferable? the beginning was good but the plot did not deliver at all

Olivie Blake has done it again. She has a way of making one stick to reading her book till the end without stopping at any point. God, how I love this book so much. 
Her writing style is unmatched. She makes you feel. This particular book is just filled with pure angst. It broke me. 
The story is about 2 families trying to control their domains, but blood was spilled trying to do that. They had to fight to stay relevant even though one was cheating the other. At first, I thought the story would be about Sasha and Lev, but it turned out that I was wrong. 
I enjoyed the tragedy. I knew what I was getting myself into before starting, but that didn’t stop me from crying. 

“You are you, an entire whole, all on your own. If you have loved and been loved, then you are richer for it; you don’t become a smaller version of yourself simply because what you once had is gone.”

“At best, Dimitri Fedorov was Marya Antonova’s greatest weakness. At worst, she was his.”

I’ll now proceed to read more of Olivie Blake’s books!

PAIN!! Had me screaming, crying, sobbing, and gasping for air; It was such an exhilarating read. Not even halfway through the book, and my heart already broke into pieces. The world-building was phenomenal, and the characters were amazing— Dimitri, Masha, Sasha, and Lev deserves everything good, I love them so much. Olivie Blake never disappoints with her writing; it's breathtakingly beautiful. Her ability to enable readers to immerse themselves in the world she created is outstanding. I am convinced she can write a Shakespeare piece, but he can never write an Olivie Blake novel. I'm at loss of words that this review isn't even half of what I want to say about this book. I love it so much, and it is definitely sitting on my all time favorite books shelf!! mashadima and sashalev owns my heart pls take it.

loved the characters and the story. took me forever to read tho, like maybe it’s cos of the pov type and the writing style took a while to get used to.

Montagues and Capulets but make them rival witch families ! this was not at all what I was expecting honestly. it was really slow moving mostly because it is hugely inspired by Shakespeare and was mainly a complex scheme/political scheme being laid out throughout the whole book. but one of the most beautifully romantic written books I’ve ever read (annotated the fuck out of this book).

Read the Tor e-book version. My heart is currently ripped into tiny, tiny little pieces. Great character study, as well as really, really well-done dialogue. Didn't realize this was going to kind of be a Romeo and Juliet re-telling with sprinkles of folklore mixed in! Also really loved how it dove into the cycle of parents not fully understanding their children as they are, but instead of how they want them to be. Highly recommend.
