Headcase is the 4th installment in the "Necessary Evils" series and I absolutely adored this book just as much as the previous ones. I was really curious in how this author would implement the "twins" and yeah like typical James fashion, it kicked booty! There is something about her writing style that sucks me right into the story. I was so hooked into this one and eager to see where this one was going and how she was going to develop it and yeah I SO wasn't expecting some aspects, but it was pure fun anyway. She definitely tends to keep me on my toes with these and I dearly loved it.

Headcase is the setup where we have our two protagonists: Asa and Zane. Zane is a aspiring journalist, and barely financially surviving. He is recovering from the loss of his brother who was as close to him as a twin would be. He needs a story and a big one, and he begins to focus on a plan to get a story on the Mulvaney family and he runs to Asa at a awards dinner. They share a passionate night together, and when Zane follows Asa on a job, Zane is now at risk. And now Asa will need to convince Zane not to go public with what he knows. But as they begin to work on a story with a mystery surrouding college suicides, things get definitely more real for Asa and now the greatest threat to Zane is his twin who will protect him no matter what....

I really had a blast with this one here, and it was so interesting seeing how this would be developed here. I was intrigued to see where the author would take this one. The twins books I have really been looking forward to, because throughout the series you can tell that their connection is deep and they a psychological connection. I really adored getting to Asa's book though. He really likes things in the bedroom a bit more animalistic and that was interesting and I really loved the unique on take on BDSM that happened in this one here. But both are completely into it and I really enjoyed Zane as a character. I get nervous around journalist characters, but the author wrote this one fairly well here. The romance is passionate hot and deep. I loved the interchange between these two, definitely delectable in every way. I was hoping for a bit more interactions with Avi and Zane to be honest, just because of how close the twins are, but maybe we will see that in Avi's book. Definitely hoping for that.

My Outlook

these books are literally just the epitome of no thoughts head empty and i really can't believe how much i love it. they're such a fun absolutely RIDICULOUS ride but somehow it totally works for me. i can't explain it and i'm not even gonna try.

Estaba muy consciente que este libro no me iba a encantar, pero realmente esperaba que no fuese así 🤧

A ver, la cosa sigue siendo buenísima ok? la familia Mulvaney sigue teniendo mi corazón, el insta-love no me decepciona, en serio amo que todos los libros tengan un poco de found family y esta familia de psicópatas no pare de crecer etc 

pero como que no conecté muy bien ni con Zane ni con Asa 😔 y sus escenas de smut no me cuadraron porque me daban muchas vibes a las de naomi y sebastian (thorns duet de rk) y ava y alex (twisted love de ah) —me parece que la gente que ha leído alguno de esos libros tendrá una idea de lo que me refiero—

lo único que me sorprendió que me gustara es la extraña dinámica entre avi, asa, zane y felix 🤝🏻 súper raro todo pero lo compro (además fan de ese juego que tienen sobre bervely)

en fin, ahora archer me parece el verdadero enigma de la familia (y en verdad estoy esperando que le haga una intervención pronto) y que suelten un poco más del chisme de aiden (del cual no sabemos NADA de su libro) 🤧

Listen. Every time I say “this book is my favorite in the series” and then Onley writes another book in the series and it becomes my newest favorite. Rinse. Repeat. 

I have been not so patiently waiting to read about the Murder twins and twin numero uno did not disappoint. Asa and Zane were everything I wanted them to be. But in true Onley James fashion, there were also so many good surprises along the way that made them even better. The banter between the two of them was so funny and witty. This was the perfect enemies to lovers energy I needed in my life. 

Asa’s relationship with Zane is primal and a bit darker than his brother’s relationships with their SO’s. Zane is trying to dig up dirt on the Mulvaney’s in order to catch his big journalism break and Asa is trying to keep Zane stitched to his side. As they become closer and begin investigating the mysterious deaths of several college students, including Zane’s brother, Gage, they begin to unravel a dark game that’s being run by a sick, twisted individual. 

I loved that we got to explore Asa’s relationship with his brother, Avi, and how their dynamic works. Absolutely fascinating. It was so heartwarming to see Zane find a family that accepts him in the Mulvaney murder squad. My boy needed it because his mom is a real piece of shit. 

All of the sneak peaks into Avi and Felix’s relationship has me chomping at the bit for their book, Madman, which is next up in the series. Onley really sprinkled in so many hints and Easter eggs about Archer and his mysterious life and Aiden and Thomas’s tumultuous relationship. 

This book is the darkest in the series as it does deal with heavier subject matter, but Onley wrote about it in such a careful, thoughtful way. 

I adore this series so much. 5/5 ⭐️
