The Scarlet Pimpernel

I have a love hate relationship with this book because on one hand, heck yeah!!! mystery and intrigue and the French Revolution!!!! on the other, I feel like Marguerite was honestly slightly stupid (although tbf I probably would've acted the same way)

Emmuska Orczy

Paris 1792. Efter revolutionen bliver overklassen udsat for folkets retfærdige harme. Mange bliver henrettet i guillotinen, men en del undslipper, takket være en mystisk engelsk aristokrat, som kalder sig Den røde Pimpernel

Super fun, fast paced, easy read. A true classic - clearly the foundation for so many of our stories today.

The Terror has begun. Paris, 1792. Each day scores of the French nobility feed the guillotine. They are trapped in the capital. There is no escape. But rumours whisper of a league of young English gentleman of unparalleled daring who are risking their lives to spirit aristocrats across the Channel. They leave no trace behind them except a note from the 'Scarlet Pimpernel'. The ruthless spy master Chauvelin is determined to stop the rescuers by fair means or foul, and, desperately outnumbered, the Scarlet Pimpernel and his men must use all their wits to evade capture and stay alive.

This is one of my favorite stories of all time with one of the best climaxes EVER, and I loved revisiting it for the first time in YEARS. However, the writing style is honestly annoying. Yes, it has all the emotionalism we expect from Edwardian fiction, but can someone please buy the woman a thesaurus? 😆 It was extremely repetitive. all the same adjectives were used in every scene and the same phrases about how the characters felt. None of this will ever detract from the story for me, but the writing style just isn't the most polished.

BARONESS. ORCZY

Baroness Orczy's classic tale of adventure during the French Revolution. Also available as an unabridged audiobook, read by Julian Rhind-Tutt. Paris, 1792. The Terror has begun. Every day, scores of the French nobility are delivered to the guillotine. Trapped in the capital, they have no way of escape. But rumours abound of a league of young English gentlemen who are risking their lives to spirit French aristocrats away to safety across the Channel. Led by a man known only as the 'Scarlet Pimpernel', they leave no trace behind them save a single note. Determined to stop them, ruthless spymaster Chauvelin travels to England and embarks on a quest to uncover the identity of their leader, forcing the Scarlet Pimpernel and his men to summon all their courage and wits to evade capture and stay alive. PRAISE FOR THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL "Anyone who feels that their outward manner is but a travesty of their inner self can hardly fail to respond to THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL" - Independent "The Baroness Orczy invented the "masked avenger" genre of fiction - the swashbuckling hero of dual identity. Her progeny include Zorro, Superman, The Lone Ranger and many others." - Audiofile Magazine

I was pleasantly surprised by this story! I am normally tentative about classics but this had the perfect mix of tension, action, drama, and romance.

The characters were engaging and cleverly crafted and each of their perspectives was a great addition to the story.
