Matt Killeen

After her mother is shot at a Nazi checkpoint, 15-year-old Sarah meets a mysterious man who's part of the secret resistance against the Third Reich. He needs Sarah, who's Jewish, to hide in plain sight at a school for the daughters of top Nazi brass, posing as one of them.

Orphan Monster Spy

This was actually surprisingly surprising.

The first few chapters were a little slow but it got exciting quite quickly.

I’m not good at writing reviews (surprisingly surprising was a joke btw) and yeah so my apologies but honestly this was amazing. The way Matt Killeen describes simple things like drinking hot coffee after a deathly mission sound incredible was crazy! I hate coffee but I want one now.

Sorry about this disgraceful review but life isn’t serious so my review won’t be either.

I have to admit I could have DNF this book at any point and wouldn't have been left wondering what happened. I just never could fully invest in the story. If I have to hear the term "Dumme Schlampe" one more time, I'll lose my mind.

This book focuses on a very tiny part of the war, it doesn't discus the fighting or the internment camps, which is fine, not all WWII books need to include those things, but at the same time this book felt like it was just taking advantage of this time in history to tell a triggering story. Lots of the horrible things that happened seemed liked they were for shock factor and so I feel it didn't really honor the lives of those who suffered at the hands of the Reich.

The audiobook narrator did a good job, the story was good background noise.

TW: death of parent, discussion of discrimination and death of Jews, bullying, abuse of students, pedophilia, incest, murder of a person with autism.

y'all, i'm sure there are plenty of people out there that LOVED this book. there's nothing wrong with it. the writing is fine. but holy heck, it dragged so much for me.

Sarah has played manyroles. Dutiful daughter. Talented gymnast. Persecuted Jew. Lost orphan. But nowshe faces her most challenging role of all. Now she must become the very thingshe hates. For the only way she can survive as a spy at a boarding school forthe cream of Nazi society is to become a monster like them. A monster who can destroy them. Discover the girl who can beatBond and Bourne at their own game, in this utterly addictive thriller from ajaw-dropping new talent.

I really enjoyed this book. It's out of my comfort zone of fantasy and science fiction being a historical fiction but it's bloody good. Some parts were hard to read (subject matter not anything bad on the writers part) but it was compelling. I loved Sarah so much and am actually really looking forward to her next mission. Highly recommend 4 and a half stars.
