I really enjoyed the first couple chapters but then struggled through the rest as it felt like it drug on and picked up in the last maybe 3-4 chapters.

The Throne of Fire by Rick Riordan is the second of the Kane Chronicles. Carter and Sadie working apart and later together have do everything in their power to stop Apophis and awaken the sun god Ra.

It opens strong with Carter trying to liberate a magical item from a museum, only to have things go horribly wrong. It's a dramatic and funny opening but that initial energy and humor slowly peters out.

Although I normally adore Egyptian mythology, the pacing felt off here. The chapter alternate between brother and sister, just as the first book and just as the latest bunch of Amelia Peabody mysteries (by Elizabeth Peters) have done with Amelia's memoir and manuscript H (standing in for Ramses's adventures apart from his mother). Just as the manuscript H sections take a few pages to fall into Ramses's voice, so do these alternating chapters. It's usually the second of the paired chapters that truly feels like it's written by one sibling over the other.

In the middle there's also some teenage angst over girls and boys (depending on whom is narrating). The crushes are cute in small doses but they too get in the way of ever ticking clock. If Riordan wants to continue growing the romance of the Kane twins, I hope he gives a longer time line for their next crisis. It seems that every single one of his books come down to a two week timeline before the world goes to hell again. It's getting both tiresome and unbelievable.

The Throne of Fire is so much better than the first book, The Red Pyramid. I really loved it every time I read adventurous middle grade book. All the Kane siblings' journey to find the Book of Ra, fortunately find Zia along the way, and wake the powerful god Ra who was nowhere to be found and hopefully defeat the chaos god Apophis. It was so exciting and action-packed! I am very much expecting more from the final book of this trilogy.

the egyphtian mythology is confusing and  complicated to me sometimes but riordan is doing a really good job at explaining it. moreover he uses it very well in this series while coming up with adventures of the kane family. he's excellent at interspersing adventures into ancient myths. in this book i felt more connected with the characters than in the previous one. i got to know them on a deeper level and feelt more involved in their story. their narration made me laugh many times and it was often hard to tear myself away from reading. i'm looking forward to seeing how it will all end.

 the Kane Chronicles (surprisingly, more than the Percy Jackson series) and The Throne of Fire is no exception. It was a perfect, humorous, fun sequel that introduced all sorts of new characters and still made some sort of sense.

In The Throne of Fire, siblings Sadie and Carter must save the world... again. The world is supposedly ending in five days, and they're not sure their team of novice magicians is up to the job. Things go terribly wrong from the start and their healer Jaz is put in a coma, but it can only go downhill for the Kanes. 

With an ice cream man-esque, killer, third-most-powerful magician hunting them down, not enough magicians on their side, no longer possessing the power they shared with Isis and Horus, and an impossible job to awaken Ra (aka Order), the sun god, before Apophis (aka Chaos) swallows the sun forever, who knows if Sadie and Carter will make it out alive?

Not to mention, Sadie's caught between a dying boy and a god of death, while Carter's love in The Red Pyramid turned out to be a piece of pottery. When Zia is awakened from her three month sleep, it's pretty clear the love is unreturned. Ugh, end of the world and there are still love problems -- will life ever be fair?!

Sadie and Carter were both great characters, as in the first book. I loved seeing them become closer as siblings from the first book while retaining the teasing-rivalry-ish relationship that keeps us laughing in between action scenes. The returning characters - Amos, Set, Desjardins, Anubis, etc. all developed as well (I'm taking a liking to Set, actually, he's a humorous fellow. Freaking annoying and inconvenient, but the few scenes with him were funny!)

The newly introduced trainees weren't present most of the time but I liked how they had their own unique powers. The only trainee that we saw a lot was Walt, and I have a feeling there's more connection between Walt and Anubis than they're letting on. I'm curious to see if he'll be okay in the next book and what Walt and Anubis' relationships with Sadie will be like. Teehee. Just to clarify: I've read the series before but basically forgot what happened. I know I enjoyed it though, which is why I'm re-reading it!

Again, I find the more conversational writing style funny and a pleasure to read through but it's totally understandable that not everyone enjoys it. The Throne of Fire is action packed, filled with jokes (some cheesier than others), and I loved it! Just like with The Red Pyramid, I'd definitely recommend it and I can't wait to (re)read the final book!

I think this was much more fantasy than the previous one, because the characters spent much more time out of our world. I really liked that aspect.

The one thing I didn't was mostly the beginning. The first 2/3 of this book was a bit bland in my opinion, because there was so much more character monolouge and less action - I couldn't really get into it.

The final 150 pages made up for that though, they were very good. I also really liked, how important the sibling relationship was, I liked that it was more in focus

(4.25/5) 3 hours 42 minutes - This is the book in the series that I remembered most about for some reason, and I did enjoy it more than the previous one. The plot seems to flow slightly better and is just generally more interesting to me. I especially like Bes' character. There are some points I'm not so keen on - for example, the relationships Sadie has with both Walt (16 while she is 13) and Anubis (thousands of years old and literally a god). However, these only occupy a small portion of the book so for the most part, the reader is able to forget they exist.

The thing with this book is, I love Rick Riordans writing but I can't help it, this book isn't as good as all other books of him. The story doesn't get me excited and I really dislike Sadie, she isn't my type of character. Still I love the writing style and humor.

Oh how I love Uncle Rick's characters. There were so many new characters here that I just adored. Plus I love Sadie and Carter. They are always super fun to read.

This one was fast-paced and had plenty of action but I did feel like it was fairly predictable.

One must remember these books are written for someone basically 1/3 of my age so can I really review it to the best extent? 

As always I just really enjoyed myself. There were moments I caught myself either smiling or laughing along with the book and you can't ask for much more than that.

Rick Riordan is one of my favorite authors of all time! I honestly wasn’t sure about my choice of reading The Kane Chronicles because I’m not as into Egyptian mythology as I am with Greek, but this series is great! I’m sure I’d have enjoyed the book even more if I was really into Egyptian myth, but Rick describes the gods/creatures so adeptly that anyone could read and enjoy this book. It’s a remarkable way to teach kids the culture of ancient Egypt. Grab their attention with intense action and sassy characters while inserting actual facts so they learn while also enjoying it. 

The fact that the kids aren’t super-human demigods but magicians descended from the ancient pharaohs of Egypt is an awesome concept. I don’t think the book would have been as enjoyable if these kids were similar to the kids of Camp Half-Blood/Camp Jupiter. Weapons are great and all, but the Hieroglyphs being divine words of power and creating spells was so cool. That being said, the changes were kind of weird at first. I mean, OLD magicians, gods traveling as companions, CELLPHONES. Once I got into the changes The Throne of Fire made for a great book. Something I don’t understand is how the 21st nome can be in Brooklyn, and Mt. Olympus and a bunch of demigods can be in Manhattan and they don’t know about each other and notice when the world is about to end because of another group of gods. Like how does the mist work on the Egyptians? I mean, Percy had the sky turned blue to signal to his mom that he was ok. The Egyptians didn’t see that when they were right there? Or the invisibility spell on the Greeks? Carter and Sadie could see the fight at the 21st nome from outside the spell, so if a demidog just happened to be, oh I don’t know, flying around on his Pegasus, you’re telling me he wouldn’t notice?? Clearly Carter and Percy have had an interaction and both seen the same monster and the same for Sadie and Annabeth. Plus Amos said to not go into Manhattan, so there has to be something going on about all this. What would even happen if they realized that there were other gods wanting to destroy the world???

Anyway, back on topic, this book was absolutely hilarious, which is one of the reasons why I love Rick Riordan’s writing. He can have a completely serious and intense life-or-death situation and insert the best comic relief. For example, Apophis is going to break free of his prison and bring chaos to the world and Carter is grumbling over how Sadie bought him Pikachu pajamas (ADORABLE by the way). The pop culture references throughout the book are what make this so relatable and modern. They also make the book a refreshing read. Carter and Sadie have impressive personalities and their brother-sister relationship was so relatable. The bickering and teasing weren’t too over-the-top and deep down they actually care for each other and are the people who know each other best.

Getting to meet new gods like Bes the Dwarf God, Tawaret protector of childbirth, Ptah the creator, Khonsu the moon and time. Not going to say why/how they meet them because of spoilers, but it was all really interesting.

The only thing I have against this book is Sadie’s age. She turns 13 in this book, yet she acts extremely mature for her age. It’s hard to remember that she’s only 12/13. I don’t know about you guys, but I wasn’t kissing two different guys on my 13th birthday, and I certainly wasn’t setting myself up for a love triangle at that age either. I guess I wouldn’t be able to read about hot Anubis if it wasn’t for Sadie’s interest, but still she’s only 13!

All in all, not as good as PJ&tO or HoO, but it was entertaining and a fun read. Besides, nothing can really compare to Percy Jackson or Heroes of Olympus. I’m already getting ready to read The Serpent’s Shadow. I can’t wait!
