Contains two short stories, "The death of beautiful deer" and "How I came to know fish" (or "How I meet with fish"). These autobiographical stories, based on author's childhood in bucolic, pre-war Czechoslovakia, include beautiful descriptions of the countryside and reminiscences about his closest family members, especially his father, who spends his time fishing with his sons before the war, and poaches a deer to give his sons a last good meal before their departure to a concentration camp.
