Our Souls at Night
Reviews

I thought this was a beautiful story till the end. I hated how it ended.

This is a sweet little novel about a man and woman who decide to spend the third act of their life together. At least in the nights. Both heartwarming and heartbreaking, this is a story about loneliness and about needing someone to talk to, to eat with, to laugh with, and to sleep next to no matter what age you are. This book is a beautiful, heartbreaking little story about two people trying to find a way out of loneliness in their old age. It's more a vignette than a fully developed story, I guess, but it rings with truth to me. There's one sort of villain, driven by his own past hurts to cause pain to someone he loves. And there's a lot more concern with What Other People Think than an old hermit like me can really understand. The prose is a little spare, but lovely and evocative. It's a short book -- just over 3 hours or so on audio. I kinda want to go back and listen to it all again, right away. I read Haruf's Plainsong years ago, and liked it very much. This is his last story, finished just a bit before he passed last year. It has a bit of the melancholy of knowing that life is getting short running through it, and that makes it all the more poignant. It's a good book. Go read it.

Beautiful Little Novel.

** spoiler alert ** I enjoyed the writing style but not the story. I'm ok when characters do stupid things as long as I understand their motivations. In this case I don't get it. However, I really liked the plain matter of fact language and will look up other books by his author.

This book was well written and insightful. It was one that I could not put down. It was fun of life, love, death, breaking out of social norms, new beginnings and heartbreak. I loved the growth of the characters and the boldness of new experiences with their advanced years. I was excited that they didn’t let their age define them. Was a little crushed and heartbroken with the ending but I would highly recommend.

This was magic. This was everything. This was all I needed at a time like this.

I'd recommend reading this in one go, as it's simple in structure. I picked this up because of the upcoming Jane Fonda/Robert Redford adaptation, but I ended up feeling sorry for the protagonists. Worth reading. Spoiler alert: Gene is a prick.

Wow just wow! I would describe this book as a warm hug from your grandparents and a simple love story that will make you hold your loved ones closer. It made me laugh, smile, hold back tears and then laugh all over again. Its a quick read and I can highly recommend the netflix adaptation.
