Venetia Aldridge QC is a distinguished barrister. When she agrees to defend Garry Ashe, accused of the brutal murder of his aunt, it is one more opportunity to triumph in her career as a criminal lawyer. But just four weeks later, Miss Aldridge is found dead. Commander Adam Dalgliesh, called in to investigate, finds motives for murder among the clients Venetia has defended, her professional colleagues, her family - even her lover. "Woman? Black? How convenient to bracket us together. Pity we haven't a black, lesbian, unmarried mother with a disability. That way you could satisfy four politically correct requirements at one go. And it's bloody condescending to me. Do you think successful women want to be made to feel that we've got where we are because men were kind enough to give us an unfair advantage?"

I am glad to read a crime novel for a change, but sadly I did not like this one - though it started out strong, the end felt a bit rushed and somehow the storyline just fell apart, for me.
