           This was an interesting novel. We follow a young good-hearted girl, Minke, through peril after peril starting in a hovel in Amsterdam to the wilds of Argentina and then to the urban setting of New York City. Minke, as brave as she was, the poor girl had to endure so much hardship and fell victim over and over. To compound matters, it seemed that every single person in our heroine's world was dastardly to some extent. The folks Minke could truly trust were weak and scarcely seen. Overall, I thought that story was well-paced and the storyline fascinating, but I never got hooked probably because it seemed that little Minke could never get a break. If the ending was fleshed out more I would have been more satisfied.

If I could give half stars, it would be two and a half. I had a really hard time getting into this book and I wanted to give up by the half-way point but I stuck with it and it finally picked up during the last 80 or so pages. The last little bit of the book made me like it a lot more but I kind of wish I could have skipped the first 200 or so pages and had just a quick one chapter summary for the first 2/3 of the book.
