Pandemonium

Pandemonium Delirium #2

Lauren Oliver2012
The old life is dead. But the old Lena is dead too. I buried her. I left her beyond a fence, behind a wall of smoke and flame. In this electrifying follow-up to her acclaimed New York Times bestseller Delirium, Lauren Oliver sets Lena on a dangerous course that hurtles through the unregulated Wilds and into the heart of a growing resistance movement. This riveting, brilliant novel crackles with the fire of fierce defiance, forbidden romance, and the sparks of a revolution about to ignite.

Great book! Awful ending. I think it's fair to say anyone who read Delirium and then reads this one will agree that the last page of this book is absolutely AWFUL (for Lena) which makes it better for us. this book also ranks as number 3 on my Top Ten Worst Cliffhangers Of All Time list. and leaves us waiting with baited breath for the next one. **Full, updated review to come**

I enjoyed this book so much! I definitely enjoyed this book more than I did Delirium, and I'm looking forward to the next book. This book switches POV's between "then" and "now" and while I did find this awesome, sometimes I got so into the "now" POV that I wanted to skip the next chapter. I also loved Julian sooo much. I though he was a great new character and I love his and Lena's relationship. I knew exactly what was going to happen at the end but there were some extra little surprises that I wasn't expecting which made it fresh. Overall, good sequel and excited for the end! :D

** spoiler alert ** Ok one thing that saved this book from being boring at the beginning was this: the author didn't just write a straight timeline where Lena gets to the wild and then keeps growing, keeps getting strong, blah blah blah, same thing we have read about a hundred times in other books, no! There is some of that in there for sure, but it's given to us in small doses like leaving us in little cliffhangers, you know?🫣, they’re in between larger sections that are pack full of adventure and "edge of your seat" kind of moments! This is what made me keep reading the book. The Going between the “past” and the “present”is what saved the book from being pretty slow and kind of boring, and instead it makes it a book worthy of being Delirium's second book ! I just loved it! Ill also add :while Delirium focuses on love, your first love to be specific, I thought Pandemonium focused a little bit more on hate, anger and healing. It certainly showed us a new side to Lena that we never saw before. The combination of her new life and losing Alex has made her get in touch with emotions that would have been closed up to her before, and it is very interesting to see how she manages navigates through her new life. I couldn't leave without a note on the new male interest. He is, something else. Yes he grew on me so much. Plus those kind of steamy scenes between him and Lena certainly helped. I felt like I was there, and it was happening to me. Haha. I think that anything more that I say will be too much, a revelation. I don't want to spoil this story for you because it's a fantastic story! Although , I will say this! that ending with her mom is heart breaking, like how can Lena’s mom not have the guts to reveal herself to her daughter?!?!?!? It’s just something I didn’t think was cool! Ok now i got to go read requiem because this book left us on a HUGE cliff hanger that made me want to pull out my hair. Literally!!! You’ll see why🫢🤭🤗🤪😆 Lord have mercy on me!

Still love it! Though I HAVE to say, I am NOT a Julian fan. He seems extremely childish like everyone needs to do everythig for him. Tack reminds me of Fang from Maximum Ride. Just had to mention that because I felt smart for making the connection.

That was disappointing. I didn't love Delirium but I enjoyed it and it was good but this... I spent almost the entire book angry. The most exciting thing for me was the end, and because I spent the entire book waiting for that to happen. (view spoiler)[ The thing that really bothers me is that we didn't know nothing until the end of the characters we met in the first book. I wanted to know what happened to Alex because it was obvious (at least for me) that he didn't die. I wanted to know what happened to Hanna too, and to Lena's mother. And I get that she couldn't know anything about them because she couldn't go back to Portland but... STILL. Instead we have a bunch of new characters and even though it was good to meet Raven and everyone else I also wanted to know about the people we had already met! Then we have Julian and I'm sorry but NO. Was it really necessary to turn this into a love triangle? It's just so stupid in my opinion. And because I knew Alex would appear at some point, it was making me sick to think she was having feelings for this guy while Alex was somewhere else. My heart broke we she said she felt more comfortable with Julian than she did with Alex and then again when Alex appears at the end and says "don't believe her". Okay maybe I'm being irrational but that's how I feel about this book. (hide spoiler)]

This book follows Lena who made it into the wilds and was taken in by some "invalids." I enjoyed this book after about 30% into it. I found it a little boring and confusing at first but grew to enjoy it. Each chapter was separated into the past or the present. I didn't like the "then" parts much but I really enjoyed the current parts. There are many new characters-not as much character development as I would have liked on some of them but that is understandable because of the way the book was written. We are also introduced to Julian-the head of the cure activist youth group. He is by far my favorite new character and if you read this book you will find out why. Lauren Oliver writes beautifully, as we have seen in Before I Fall and Delirium and this book is no exception. --------------------- I just reread this book so that I could read the third book. I enjoyed it much more than the first time and brought it up to 4 stars. The ending still makes me crazy-in a good and bad way-even though it's predictable.

Bueno. Fin.

What a frightening thing love can be, whirring and swirling around us, throwing off our judgement and hitting us when we least expect it. It's scary to be so vulnerable - terrifying even. Lauren Oliver captures this fear and turns it into a nightmare where love is a highly infections and highly dangerous disease. The moment you turn 18 you receive the treatment. In Delirium Lena discovered that life was not worth living without freedom and was willing to sacrifice almost anything to get it, in Pandemonium she must accept the only sacrifice she never wanted to make and build a life for herself in the Wilds. What I Liked: Once again the science of Oliver's world calls for recognition. She has created an arena for mass hysteria while creating an ideal well worth fighting for. In Delirium, I loved the way romances were twisted to turn the sweetness into selfishness, and the way attraction is frowned upon; it's a very puritan, adult society. In Pandemonium further emphasis is put on the Book of shhh! and the DFA feature heavily in Lena's new life, in one of her new lives. The DFA tell us what we need to know about this new world and Lena's new life. It continues the propaganda and takes it to the stage, trumpeting the need and the necessity of receiving the cure. I liked best of all the alternating chapters between then and now, between Lena picking up the ragged pieces of her life in the Wilds after the events of Delirium, and the new, polished 'cured' life she lives.

Why didn't I read this sooner? Somehow Lauren Oliver just knows how to break me into tiny pieces and leave me. Thanks to some people, I already knew a bit about the cliffhanger and what it basically entailed. However I still was shocked at the ending. It was one in the morning and I was squealing like a little girl. I mean it was lucky that I didn't wake anyone up. In Delirium I liked Lena, but I didn't love her as a main character. This time though I just felt her grow on me as she grew as a person. The character development for Lena was immense. The Then and Now chapter had a lot to do with this. If Lauren Oliver had only done now chapters the effect wouldn't have been so drastic. Finding out about the Wilds was also something I enjoyed. It was all related back to how Lena's current was. All the lessons she learnt were reflected back into every aspect of her life. As for Teams, I have to say that I will forever be Team Alex simply because he taught Lena how to love and, essentially, how to be human. There is nothing wrong with Julian. In fact, I found myself liking him. He wasn't overbearing and wasn't an arrogant bad boy. He was just Lena in Delirium. He was facing the terrifying idea that he had come down with delira. But Lena needs Alex and Alex needs Lena. Fact. So Pandemonium was ASTOUNDING! No more words are needed.

It took me almost over a year until I can go further than a few pages in this book. I was so angered by the ending of the first and because I didn't know what awaited me in these next two I was scared to find out. The long wait made it possible for me to survive what happened. I love the writing style and I see character development.... I am becoming quite fond of this series.
