Since I have been a fan of Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon (both of whom figure in the trilogy) since I was a teenager, and because I have read quite a bit WWI history, I read The Ghost Road eagerly, and hated for it to end. Ten years later I came to the realization (duh) that this was a trilogy, and I binge read The Eye in the Door and Regeneration. If this interests you, you owe it to yourself to read Sassoon's and Owens' poetry. The anger of both mens' work leaps off the page at you, but more about them later. But Pat Barker has done that doomed generation justice in her work, and her skill as a novelist almost makes you forget this is history, and this insanity really happened. After that war, I do not think we could ever again find a generation willing to go to its death like Spartans, the way that one did. Anyway, I just loved these books. 

So a sample of Sassoon's work:

But he did for them both by his plan of attack.

And from Wilfred Owen, whom I love. His quote about writing poetry at the front, constantly in combat, is engraved in stone on the floor of Westminster Cathedral: "My subject is War, and the pity of war, and the poetry is in the pity". His possibly best known, and most bitter poem is Dulce et Decorum Est, but I like a more hopeful poem, The Next War, which is more poignant because his hope has not been, or at least not fully, fulfilled. The preamble is from Sassoon:

War's a joke for me and you,
Wile we know such dreams are true.

Out there, we've walked quite friendly up to Death,-
Sat down and eaten with him, cool and bland,-
Pardoned his spilling mess-tins in our hand.
We've sniffed the green thick odour of his breath,-
Our eyes wept, but our courage didn't writhe.

Shrapnel. We chorussed when he sang aloft,
We whistled while he shaved us with his scythe.

Oh, Death was never enemy of ours!
We laughed at him, we leagued with him, old chum.
No soldier's paid to kick against His powers.

And greater wars: when each proud fighter brags
He wars on Death, for lives; not men, for flags.

It was an old book tha t I wanted to read for awhile. It was a good take on the life of a soldier.

Such a good book, I started it this morning and have pretty much read it in one sitting!
Barker has a fantastic writing style, dealing with serious topics while never once making the text arduous or heavy. I loved the insight which the this snapshot of Sasoon's life gave us, particularly in relation to his influence on Wilfred Owen - I think my favourite but has to be the section correcting Anthem for Doomed Youth.
I can't wait to read Pat Barker's other books!

Just incredible. So vivid. Really human perspective on the First World War. I absolutely loved it, and can't recommend it enough.

I had to read this for school, and I'm glad I did because it was interesting, if slow and with a clear message: war is bad. This novel focuses on Rivers and a group of patients with shell-shock at a ward during World War I. It's a look at early techniques in psychiatry and how absolutely horrible war is. Regeneration also includes many historical characters; Rivers himself was real, Sassoon was a conscientious objector and of course, the poet Owen is also present. 

There are a handful of other characters that stand out: Burns, who can't eat due to his trauma, and Prior, who is selectively mute. It's an interesting demonstration of how war trauma affects people. My complaint is that at times it felt like the novel was written simply to showcase the horrors and aftereffects of the war; there wasn't much of a plot other than that. 

I feel like how Baker uses fictionalized versions of real characters to tell a story lessens its impact. Now, I actually have read a history book about Britain's anti-war movement, and I can't remember reading about Owen or Sassoon, but this book makes me want to revisit it. Is it better to read a fictionalized version of events that gets the message across, or a history book that tells many different sides? I guess it's just preference.

Mehr oder weniger zufällig habe ich dieses Jahr einige Bücher gelesen, die im Ersten Weltkrieg spielen. Ob es die diversen 100-Jahre-1. Weltkrieg-Erinnerungsveranstaltungen waren, die mich dazu brachten oder ob es Zufall ist, ich weiß es nicht genau. Pat Barker’s „Regeneration“ ist auf jeden Fall schon sehr lange auf meiner „To-Read-Liste“. Mitte der 90er Jahre war die Trilogie in aller Munde und Pat Barker gewann auch den Booker Prize für den dritten Band „The Ghost Road“.

„Regeneration“ ist der erste Band in der Serie, der sich hauptsächlich mit den psychologischen Effekten beschäftigt, die durch den Krieg bei den Soldaten ausgelöst wurden. Die Geschichte spielt in Craiglockheart, einem Militär-Hospital in Schottland, das sich auf die Behandlung von „Shellshock“ und andere Kriegstraumata spezialisiert hat.

This book has been high on my list for a long time but this read-through in particular really spoke to me in a new way; so much of what's here is still relevant.
