The Academy is called when a woman's body is found in Boston. She has been tortured, sexually abused, her body tattooed with handprints. The same sort of handprints Lucy had seen on the flesh of her latest pick-up. Meanwhile, Scarpetta and Marino are investigating the disappearance of a family in Florida, called in by a concerned neighbour, but as they search and find the tell-tale signs of abduction rather than disappearance, they also discover that someone had assumed the identity of the caller, and she is now dead. They've been set up, and it becomes clear that someone is tracking their every move.

It's been a long time since I picked up a Patricia Cornwell; and I do have a soft spot for Scarpetta. Predator definitely wasn't as gripping as her earlier books but I wouldn't say it was disastrous. In fact, its made me want to go back and read the Scarpetta books I haven't already so that says a lot. 
The plot was fast paced, characters easy to get to know (which is good news for people unfamiliar with Lucy, Benton and Marino) and the detail plentiful. But I felt it was all a bit too hurried along.

I was so confused by this whole book. There are some major jumps and changes in a couple characters that aren't explained. I finished this feeling like I had no idea what was going on, or what had really happened. There is a point in the last chapter at the very end of the chapter where a character is being attacked. The next chapter picks and the kay and Benton are just driving in the car. I'm going to try to read the next 3 because I got them from the library. But I dont know if I'll continue beyond that.
