This was a read I was recommended about 10 years ago. Back in high school my Kathy Reich's obsession began and I had a conversation about her with my school librarian, she recommended Patricia Cornwells Kay Scarpetta series. I'm unsure why it took me so long to finally begin the series but I really enjoyed this book! 

I'm a sucker for a good mystery, and forensic science book. I enjoyed that there was the science explained in this book, experiments that one would actually do when working in forensics, there was a bit of political aspect to it which was a good side angle to the story and I enjoyed quite a few characters (and hated a few of course) can't wait for the next case!

I’m not going to lie, I read this book because my mom told me it was a must read. I wasn’t a fan. I’m from Virginia and I work in Richmond so it’s pretty cool to know all the areas they’re talking about, but there was too much description. I felt like the book was filled with so many adjectives it was overwhelming. I found myself skimming a lot. I gave it 3 stars because I was unable to guess the killer, but I wasn’t a fan.

There is no pattern: the killer appears to strike at random - but always early on Saturday mornings. my overall opinion of this book is I thought it was okay, I liked the character development of Kay Scarpetta and getting to know her and what she does for her job and the stuff she has to put up with working in generally a male dominating career, however I found the crime plot lacking. It was interesting until the end and wasn't all that shocked and once finished It was just a shrug o the shoulder and on to the next book.

I've read this book before, probably about ten years ago when I picked up a handful of Patricia Cornwell novels in a charity shop. Knowing a had a heap of travelling to to I figured the Kay Scarpetta series would be some great easy reading. Even with the first instalment being a re-read, I wasn't disappointed. Sure, there are elements of the characters I remembered, but the story flows like a good crime novel should. It's kind of like reading a version of 'A Touch of Frost'. It isn't mind blowing, but it isn't predictable. The mystery element is great and the details given to the plot are really awesome. I'm looking forward to going through the rest of the books in order.

My main gripe is the speech used by Marino - he uses 'was' when he should use 'were'. 

"It's them that was talking about it" cringe.

All That Remains

This is the first book in the series that I hadn't read until now. Surprisingly also my least favourite so far. The plot was very weak and there wasn't any good sub plot or character development to compensate for that.

Voy a ser honesta: compré este libro porque leí que Karin Slaughter dijo que esta autora fue su inspiración para empezar a escribir. Y muchos críticos las comparan, así que tenía que leer algo de Patricia Cornwell. Aunque sea para sacarme la curiosidad.

La trama es bastante típica, pero esta bien desarrollada y te mantiene en vilo durante todo el libro. Lo único que no me gustó mucho, o no me llegué a enganchar más que nada, fue la ambientación de la historia. Este libro fue escrito en 1990 y transcurre en ese mismo año. Fue un poco raro para mí leer un policial donde recién se empiezan a probar algunas tecnologías. Sentí que esto hacía que el ritmo de la historia fuera lento.

Los personajes sí son lo más típico que puede haber en una novela policial. Tenemos a la protagonista inteligente y fuerte que es discriminada y marginada por ser mujer, al policía machista resentido y al bueno y simpático. Para mí le faltó profundidad y carácter a los personajes. A pesar de esto me gustaron. En especial Kay y como narra todo el proceso de peritaje. También me pareció muy interesante todo el desarrollo y las curiosidades sobre la medicina forense. No hay muchos libros de este género que expliquen tan bien este tema. 

En general me gustó el libro. Es una buena historia, te mantiene en vilo y es entretenido. Pero no me sorprendió. Es una historia común que ya leí o vi antes (y en el fondo lo comparo con la serie de Will Trent y en mi opinión no le llega ni a los talones).

Al amparo de la noche, un brutal asesino esta actuando en Richmond, Virginia, sin dejar mas rastro que una horrible serie de estrangulamientos. Tres mujeres han aparecido salvajemente asesinadas en sus propios dormitorios. No hay ningun patron de conducta, mas alla de que el responsable de estos crimenes deja muy pocas pistas y actua siempre los sabados de madrugada. De manera que cuando la doctora Kay Scarpetta, jefa del Departamento de Medicina Legal de la ciudad, recibe una llamada a las dos y media de la madrugada, supone que algo grave ha sucedido: hay una cuarta victima. Y se teme que a esta le seguiran otras, a menos que ella logre recabar nuevas pruebas que ayuden a la policia. Kay Scarpetta recurrira a los ultimos avances en la investigacion forense para desenmascarar al maniaco, y tendra que verselas con aquellos que quieren sabotear su trabajo y arruinar su reputacion…, y es que no a todo el mundo le agrada ver a una mujer en un puesto tan influyente. Post mortem fue el primer titulo protagonizado por la doctora Kay Scarpetta que publico Patricia Cornwell. Por esta novela recibio multiples premios literarios y con ella comenzo una de las series de novela criminal mas exitosas de todos los tiempos.

Una de mis metas de 2017 en cuanto a la lectura es tratar de leer libros que estén fuera de lo que usualmente me inclino a leer. Post mórtem, de Patricia Cornwell, pertenece a un género que no es de mis favoritos ni de los que más me llama la atención, por lo que me llevé una grata sorpresa cuando terminé de leerlo y quería continuar con la serie de la forense Scarpetta.
Recomiendo este libro a todos aquellos amantes de las novelas policiales, o de las series similares a los temas tratados en estos libros. Todo aquel que quiera pasar el rato junto a una buena novela de intriga, sepa que en Post Mórtem va a encontrar una historia que lo va a tener con las narices en el libro hasta que llegue al final y pueda descubrirse la verdadera identidad del asesino. Cornwell no sólo logra crear una buena historia de suspenso en esta primera entrega de su saga, sino que también logra crear un personaje multidimensional en Kay que es fuerte, perseverante, que no le teme a nada, ni siquiera a las constantes críticas y a los cuestionamientos realizados en su contra por ser una mujer en un espacio de trabajo mayoritariamente masculino. Totalmente recomendable para los amantes de los libros thriller o policiales!

It's too slow, narration doesn't pick up and we're always at the same point. I mean, one murder in 200 pages? Okay there were three more before the book started but what kind of serial killer doesn't kill more than once in 200 pages? I wondered a lot "will he kill someone else or not?" And it's too technical, don't get me wrong I love chemistry talking, but they're things I already know and I think a "normal" reader (as in not chemistry graduate) will get bored about that.

I can't believe it took me 12 days to read 300 pages...

So now I don’t know whether to buy the other books of the series or not… Do they get better?
