Cataloged as fiction because of all the conversations and thoughts attributed to Mille and Richard, but fits better with narrative nonfiction. I liked the format, free verse allowed the author to cover almost two decades in a concise manner that keeps the story moving with good pacing.

I just can’t understand the hatred some people had that made them want to inflict pain and suffering on others. But then other people amaze me with their ability to continue fighting. The story is a well known one but this is so well written. You fall in love with the Millie and Richard as they fall in love with each other. The part that surprised me the most was the fact that “The last anti-miscegenation law in the United States, in Alabama, was reverses in the year 2000.” I could not believe that even after the Supreme Court ruling in 1967, this was still happening. The fight continues.
