This fictional depiction of historic Florida was an incredibly captivating story.  It garnered so much respect for our early settlers and the horrific conditions they endured to begin to build what we see today.  Patrick Smith truly brought the characters and the events long ago to life.

This is a must-read for any native Floridian. This great multigenerational story tells of one family's humble beginnings trying to scratch out their existence in the Florida scrub to becomming cattle ranchers (crackers) and then citrus farmers. As the family accumulates wealth, they buy land. Each new generation has their own ideas and shifts in their values. Reverance for the land as a resource for farming and grazing diminshes as its property value increases.
