Not literary read, but an inspirational book. Average people (average in some respects, I guess) can do amazing things, one child, one school, one country at a time.

I imagine that I put this book on my to read list with a whole lot more optimism and interest than when I finally got around to reading it. Then, when I added the book I happened to read a review from someone who mentioned inaccuracies. That fact stuck in my head throughout the reading.
Even if I had not read that, however, I do not think I could have engaged with the narrative. The co-author, who I am saddened to find out has subsequently committed suicide, wrote in a near hagiographical style of Mortenson, a man who could apparently do no wrong even when the narrative stated that he made mistakes. 
I fully support the idea. The execution has serious flaws.

Wowza. Well, coming back from Kenya, I figured this book would be a great read to keep me in tune with my humanitarian experiences. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Mortenson's devotion to education in Pakistan and later in Afghanistan. I could definitely relate, having just come back from seeing kids in Kenya benefit from an education. The writing was also pretty good; the story was well weaved.

I think books like these need to be read by everyone, especially in developed countries. We have so many prejudged opinions about countries like Pakistan or Afghanistan, and about who we think those citizens are and what they believe in. This book really proves that people in the middle east simply want the best for their families and their people, and many, many of them know that education is the best and most lasting way of providing a good future life for their children.

This was a great read, definitely worth my time!
