Perfume The Story of a Murderer
Reviews

not big on associating my favourite perfume w grenouille after this 😕

I will always regard this novel fondly although now I am unsure of its true value. It was one of the initial books I read that unlocked to me a new world of reading, whereby I felt capable of reading books that are not aimed at teenagers. When I first read it, my 12 year old mind was expanded and it affected my writing style for the next few months. I can still smell this book.
I want to reread, but I am scared of breaking the spell.

this is one of the strangest books I have ever read and it genuinely caused me to lose my mind in sections Perfume has the uniquely horrific premise of following a man born with an extraordinary sense of smell who decides the most beautiful scent in the world is that of virginal girls and decides to start murdering them in order to distil and preserve their scent for perfume It's genuinely horrific and creepy in parts and also,, way too interested in sexually describing 12-year-old girls. The writing is great but the story does drag in parts. I do think this is one of those books I am going to think about constant forever due to how weird, unsettling and unique it is

Highlights

He who ruled scent ruled the hearts of men.

So spoke Grenouille the Great and, while the peasantry of scent danced and celebrated beneath him, he glided with wide-stretched wings down from his golden clouds, across the nocturnal fields of his soul, and home to his heart.
