Armored Hearts

Armored Hearts Fantasy Steampunk

When a crippled young lord rescues a girl falling from a tree, it reveals a secret about himself and his mother's side of the family that could put him at the center of a war with beings he thought only existed in fairy tales. Tristan Gareth Smyth lived his entire life stuck at home at Waverly Park and left behind while his Grandfather makes trips to London, all because of his blasted wheelchair. Then an American heiress falls in his lap, literally, and he must find a way to keep her at a distance to protect not only his secret, but everyone around him from an assassin sent to kill him.

** spoiler alert ** I really really really have to refrain from reading ya in the future. I keep giving it a try, thinking it can’t be that bad but it usually is… Well it’s my own fault so I shouldn’t complain too much. The thing is, when I first started reading ya the books didn’t feel as immature as most do know. They felt more adult than young even though the characters where underage. Armoured Hearts was pretty much okay until Gareth & Jessamine flew together, then it all got really corny and definitely felt like ya. I would have left it at that had this been the only problem with the book but character development is poorly done here. Take Jessamine for example. She wants to marry Gareth because of what happened when they were both children, which doesn’t make a lot of sense. I hate it when authors try and justify the instalove by explaining the characters met for about 5 minutes when they were younger... Anyway, when Jessamine comes to England as an “adult”, she’s more or less known Gareth for about 5 seconds but she and she alone knows what he really is like on the inside. She understands, she sees right through him. No of course he is not the insufferable heir everyone seems to think he is! Deep inside he is just a scared, hurt little boy (or something of the sort). Just ask Jessamine, she knows! I just find him plainly annoying. When he first meets Jessamine, he can’t stand her (we all know where this is going right?) but after about two seconds he’s already falling for her (well I have to say his hormones seem to help a bit here). So ten seconds have now passed and they are getting married! Of course! That makes perfect sense! Okay, to be fair he only accepts to marry her to save Tabitha from her horrible fate. Still, the whole thing is silly. Of course once they are married he realizes that life without her would be unbearable... Ok, I rest my case. No more ya for me or I’ll scream!
