this book was better than I thought it would be. I usually hate books where characters are insufferable but this one was actually super psychologically interesting! I’m not super into thrillers but this was defo a good one. Not amazing but well written and a quick fun read

This is the perfect Thriller to read on a Sunday under a Blanket watching the sun go down and just escaping to the world that Ellery Lloyd has created, it was easy to get lost in the Story and the characters within the book and The Twists and turns that the book takes really leaves you guessing as to what is going to happen. It set out to answer the Question - What Happens If I share too much online? 

Set in London, Emmy is a successful influencer, a mummy blogger who is showing the world all the struggles and challenges as a mom –the good, the bad, and the ugly. But mostly the ugly, which makes her much loved and relatable among moms over the world.

Who wants to see the perfect mum and family?

Throughout the book there are 3 main narrators, and we get the story from each of them as we go:

Emmy: (Mamabare) the wildly successful “Instamum” influencer. You will not like her, which is, of course, the point.

the fed-up husband who is sick of his wife’s monetizing every mundane moment of their family’s life and then sharing it all online. But Emmy’s job pays the bills. His commentary, especially in the beginning, was hilarious 

The Nameless stalker: A person who is obsessed with “mamabare” and has a personal vendetta against her. She is plotting to take her down. Emmy must suffer as she has suffered. I found these sections really ramped up the tension within the book and always leave me guessing “who they are” 

This was a brilliant look into social media while also being a thrilling page-turner. I was hooked from the beginning, right from the Off I was hooked, I knew that I was going to enjoy this one and with every page turn and every cliff-hanger the tension grew and grew. The last half of the book is when the story begins to take some dark twisty turns.

I feel it was kinda slow in the beginning and the action came only in the end. But these characters were so despicable that I almost came to like the villain in the story. But the plot twists were really good.

           Loved this book! What a wild ride, it explores the dark side of social media and influencers. I wanted to hate the ending but it's reality, tragedy = more fame for influencers. This book kept me on my toes for my most of it and I enjoyed seeing the stalkers thoughts as a pov.

A famous influencer, Emmy is an "Instamum" with a million followers. She has two children, a wonderful husband, and a wonderful life. But not all that glitters, as they say. Especially when some of your followers don't like you. At all.

This novel had a lot of potential. But the plot was overshadowed by a lot of information dumping that read like an expose of online life and hazards, more than a novel. And the twist at the ending really needed me to suspend belief. So, it was just an average read for me, nothing more.

People Like Her by Ellery Lloyd is a thriller about a mom with a large instagram following which puts a strain on her marriage. What she doesn't realize is that one of her millions of followers means her harm.

There were some things I really liked about this book. I appreciated the commentary on dads being praised for doing the bare minimum for their children. I also enjoyed the discussion about women feeling the pressure to be mothers even if they don't really want to and eventually regret it.

Unfortunately there were a few things that ruined this experience for me. First, I'm not really sure why these people were even married to begin with. I might understand why they dated but marriage?? I don't buy it. I think if they were honest with each other, things might have been better for them. I also had to suspend A LOT of disbelief for the ending. Parts just seemed too easy or convenient and what happens in the epilogue just seems too farfetched. Lastly, there was a throw away line about periods being what makes a woman a woman and that uhh... reminded me of the transphobe who shall not be named and it was a weird choice to include as it had NOTHING to do with the plot. Do not recommend.

I was so excited for this book. It sounded so interesting and I had hoped I would love it. Unfortunately that was not the case. This book was PAINFUL to get through. It was so boring. Every time anything happened and I got excited about something it was all wrapped up in a few pages and was back to boring. Absolutely nothing happened until the last chapter. It was so many words to say absolutely nothing. I wanted to know what happened so I kept reading until the end, it was not worth it. The end did not pay off, it was not exciting. Even the plot twist was over within like two pages and I did not care. I’m just so disappointed.

Wow. I mean...wow. I tend to stay away from thriller/psychological thriller books because I tend to worry over the content and how it could happen to me. But, I am a sucker for stories about influencers. I don't know why, but I like to see how the other half live. While I love my blog and my bookstagram, I went into reading People Like Her thinking I had nothing to worry about since I have so few followers.

Emmy is a famous Instagram mom from London. You know the one - documents every picture perfect moment in her life and gets a boatload of free swag and endorsements from it? The ones designed to make you feel like you're not living your life like you should. Her husband, Dan, is a writer who is struggling to write his second novel. Together, their lives look oh so perfect on the 'gram. But like the copy states "followed by millions - watched by one."

As we get to know Emmy and her family, we see how her family really is, and how the world of being insta-famous can really be. How much time and effort go into planning that picture perfect moment. And we are talking months, not days. As I read through this, I kept thinking "well...maybe that's why I don't have many followers" since I plan my posts on the fly. 

The chapters are narrated by both Dan and Emmy, and flip back and forth. A third unknown character's POV pops in from time to time, and we get to know this character more and more as the book goes on. This third person is watching Emmy, but not just on Instagram. I am a reader who is good with multiple POV's, and I felt like this really worked to tell this story. 

Let's be honest - this book had me hooked from page 1. I could not stop turning the pages any faster than I did. As I got closer to the end, the book legit scared me. We are talking Verity or The Ghost Writer level of scaring me. It was very late at night, and I put the book down and said "I will read the last 35 pages in the morning, when it is very very bright outside." That didn't last long. Both of my kids must have sensed my fear, and they both woke up and crawled into bed with me. I found myself crawling out of my bed, going to my daughters room and reading the rest of the book at 3:30 am while clutching my daughter's blanket. And I finished it. And I loved it. 

I loved seeing the lengths someone would go to make a living off of social media, and comparing it to my life. I loved seeing not only the horrible side of social media (stalkers?!), but also the side of social media where people come together to help out. You'll understand that piece when you read it. 

This book is out now! I received it late last year with my Book of the Month subscription box. I highly recommend this one!

I couldn’t put this down as the italics narrator started getting closer and closer to enacting their plan, but I’m not sure I actually enjoyed this book. So many red herrings, just a Swedish Fish bag full tbh.
Jill was truly a sociopath, like utterly irredeemable. I tried to understand where she was coming from, but my GOD she was so deprived of any rational thinking past revenge.
Emmy was absolutely horrid, especially when it came to Polly (poor Polly). It was hard to feel sympathy for her, even when I knew she was being targeted by a particularly hateful individual.
Dan was the best of the worst? I liked him best until the epilogue, where he lost me. I get that people are inherently selfish, but WOW Emmy and Dan are two completely, utterly selfish individuals.
Polly was the best adult character out of everyone, and she’s on like 6 pages of the book.
And Winter?? What the fuck. Just... pretty disgusting.
