This book was fantastic. The case of Lucie Blackman is a devastating one and the case of her disappearance was a fascinating one. This was a really great true crime novel. 
I was nervous reading a white man's take on Japanese culture but it was treated with so much respect and understanding.

Lucie Blackman - tall, blonde, and 21 years-old - stepped out into the vastness of Tokyo in the summer of 2000, and disappeared forever. This title reveals the astonishing truth about Lucie and her fate. It is the story of a young woman who fell prey to unspeakabale evil, and of a loving family torn apart by grief.

Fascinating mystery, retold well, honoring all parties involved. This doesn’t read as a book taking advantage of someone’s tragedy, but rather a thoroughly-researched offering to those lost in the tragedy, and an in-depth exploration of how darkness ripples and affects us all in different ways, butting up against societal norms and expectations. I contend it could’ve been about a quarter shorter, with a few sections meandering and indulging interesting but not-fully-relevant research and details. These come in the middle, so I didn’t find it too difficult to persist as the beginning built suspense really well.

Definitely worth a read if you have any interest in true crime or cultural differences between Western and Japanese criminal procedure.
