Dune Messiah ( Dune #2 )

I liked this more than "Dune" and despite initially thinking it would be my last (I already owned it, bought at same time as "Dune", or I wouldn't have bothered), I've been convinced to read the next book and maybe even the fourth as well.

It's not great, but it's good enough -- honestly, with how I felt about the first book, this is a nice improvement. I thought "Dune" was a bloated and boring read. "Dune Messiah" is much slimmer and despite there being very little action, I found myself invested in the plots of subterfuge -- which is surprising to me only because I find Herbert's dialogue to be insane. It's his world that's most interesting.

Paul's nonsense of being able to see everything in the future is finally a hindrance of sorts; I could not have been the only person sick of it before the first book was finished. There are philosophical discussions about it: its limits, the ramifications, etc. I found it all pretty interesting.

There is a plot to murder the new Emperor and I liked the characters involved in that. They're almost entirely new, and despite not being given too much time to shine in this brief book, they all managed to play their parts well.

The stuff with Hayt was handled well, too. I was surprised to see how that process went, even if it ends with a bit of "Dune"-nonsense. It made for a good read.

While "Dune Messiah" doesn't end on what I'd consider a cliffhanger, I still found myself curious to see where the story would go from there. Unfortunately, the author's stupid son Brian (who would go on to write his own fan fiction) spoiled some stuff in the original book's afterword; still, I'll press on for now.

I do not really recommend "Dune Messiah" only because I did not like the first book. If you liked "Dune", I don't see how you need my word to press on to the next book or not, but to that person I'd say continue reading the series. It's not too cuckoo yet.

Re-reading the first trilogy in anticipation of the third movie.

My favorite of the first three, which are the ones I read.

The setting is expanded with the Bene Tleilax, their Gholas and further details on other factions and the workings of the universe.

The various plots are intricate and intersect in interesting ways without feeling too forced.

There are elegant explanations on why Paul is not an all-seeing god and why he can't exactly predict everything, which make his character interesting. He ends the first book being seen as a god by the Fremen and without some limitations to his powers he would be a dull character to follow.

Moreover, his search of the narrow path and his tries to minimize the destructive effect of his jihad are very interesting. His rejection of the role of a messiah and his insistence on not becoming a god are also very interesting and different from most popular books with similar all powerful, good, main characters.

The first two movies have been great adaptions with their own interpretations of this universe. I am very curious how this book will be translated on screen, specially Chani's role in it given her adversarial character in the previous movie.

John Dune truly outdid himself with this one. I barely even noticed the lack of action due to the unbelievable philosophy within
