This was a sweet story of the courtship of young Lieutenant Riker and local psychology student Deanna Troi. It's fun to be introduced to these characters, including Lwaxana and Mr. Homn, and to see the changing dynamics among them. It gives a more meaning to the relationship hinted at in "Encounter at Farpoint" and throughout TNG. The main story is framed by a tale of time travel -- what would Star Trek be without it? At first I was disappointed by the presence of this hackneyed sci-fi trope, but it gives greater context by looking at the long-term consequences of what was, is, and could be.
