On an April afternoon in 1746 the Jacobite cause died amid a torrent of artillery and musket fire on a windswept Culloden Moor. The ' 45 Rebellion was the last and greatest of the exiled Stuart family's attempts to win back the English crown and Prince Charles Edward Stuart, ' Bonnie Prince Charlie' , came close to success. Despite two stunning victories over government troops and an epic march into England the doomed rebellion came to a bloody and cataclysmic end at the hand of the Redcoats under the Duke of Cumberland - ' the Butcher' .
