The Word Collector by Peter H. Reynolds

This is a cute picture book about a boy named Jerome who collects words. He writes down words on paper that interest him. At first they are short words but they get more and more difficult as the book goes on. Near the end of the book a big wind blows all his words around and then Jerome realizes that they can be work that way too and he begins writing stories and poetry. It is nicely illustrated and a nice story. I borrowed the book from my public library.

I loved this book, which shows a curious little boy (Jerome) collecting books and books of his favorite words, and eventually stringing them together into poetry and songs. The end of the book shows how Jerome sharing his words with the world made other people happy, too. This was such a sweet, gentle, and affirming book about the power of creativity, and how we empower others when we share what we've created. 

The endpapers have a note from the author, Peter Reynolds that says, 

"Reach for your own words
Tell the world who you are
And how you will make it better"
