after watching the netflix documentary and this book being briefly mentioned there, i made the wrong choice of picking it up. regardless to say this was not what i was expecting.

this was a bitch to get through if i'm being honest, and it had nothing to do with the content and more with the writing style. philip carlo must have done his research perfectly well when writing this book, but man was the writing DENSE and impossible to remain interested. the amount of nonsensical details he put in here and the amount of repetitive paragraphs made me wanna give up on this book entirely. but i pulled through, and those are 16 hours of my life i'll never get back.

the first two parts of the book were actually good and gave a recount of the night stalker's crimes and also provided the backstory of his family and all the fucked up shit that the ramirez family went through while growing up. but after that, the part of the trial started and i swear i'd have preferred to watch paint dry than listen to philip carlo's monotonous and dense retelling of the trial. even the exclusive interview added at the end of the book with the killer was boring and filled with stupid and lame questions such as "do you think kids should be exposed to heavy metal music". the level of ignorance and stupidity shown through carlo's questions says it all. and don't even get me started on the author writing in the sexual fantasies ramirez's groupies had about him, like please tell me what does that add to the book about the serial killer? who told philip carlo it was a good idea to finish a book about a serial killer and rapist of -mostly- women by talking about his groupies and their sexual fantasies? he could have easily used the example of hundreds of women writing to richard and sending him pictures to explore that phenomenon through a psychological analysis but no, i guess it was easier to just write how they wanted richard ramirez to fuck them in a graveyard i guess. overall, not what i wanted from a true-crime book.
