Just finished reading "Our Friends from Frolix 8" by Philip K Dick. My first Dickian of the year! As with other Dickian book, the story revolves around the 2100's, the time of precogs and bubbleheaded men, those who are lucky enough to be bestowed more advanced skills than the others, hence the impious privileges they grant themselves, putting their kind right above all the others, hordering all of the top quality resourches, miles of land to built their demesne in, luxurious establishments; while the Old Men got the scraps. What to do then? When you have stripped of everything you have, there's really no other choice but to take risk, since you have nothing to lose. In other words: revolution. That's what drives Thors Provian to search the corner of the universe for 10 straight years, looking for a sign of intelligent life, to help out the hopeless case back on earth. He knows there's no way Old Men will win this power struggle. Will he be back? What kind of alien he encounters? Will the alien help his cause, or will they end up killing all of human being on Earth? This book got me wondering, is it ethical to seek extraterrestrial assistance in order to set the balance of power during a war between the privileged and the damned? But as i read the story, i can't help but symphatized more and more to those Old Men and Under Men--who are the bottom of society, the pariah of the system---which makes me root for Provian and Morgo. One thing I like about Philip K. Dick book is how his story involved many characters' view point. Not only we get to see how the war played out from Nick Appleton's eyes, but we get to take the enemy's side (Willis Gram) into account, how they desperately struggled to keep the status quo of the ellite. All of the collusion of consciousness leaves me shaking with anticipation, as i leave through the book all the way until the last page.

It could be a recipe for disaster when menial laborer Nick Appleton and despot Willis Gram, leader of the elite oligarchy ruling Earth, both fall in love with a black marketer of revolutionary propaganda, but everything changes dramatically when fugitive revolutionary leader Thors Provoni returns from Frolix 8 with the intent of creating anew world order. Reprint. 12,500 first printing.
