This volume collects the most recent papers on artificial intelligence (AI) and expert systems written at The Rand Corporation. Rand's leadershipin the field of AI started with the seminal work of Newell, Shaw, and Simon some thirty years ago and continues with recent work in expert systems and knowledge-based simulation. The first chapter in this volume provides a brief historical perspective of Rand's AI activity from its early days in the 1950s to its current efforts. Special attention is given to Rand's research during the past decade.
