Red Rising

A tale set in a bleak future society torn by class divisions follows the experiences of secret revolutionary Darrow, who after witnessing his wife's execution by an oppressive government joins a revolutionary cell and attempts to infiltrate an elite military academy.

Took a minute to really grab me. The first half follows classic story beats in a sort of boring way.

Never touched my heart in a meaningful way, but it was still a fun ride. I like riding roller coasters even if they don't make my heart ache, ya know?

It definitely became a page-turner by the halfway mark and I am looking forward to the next one.

Not what I expected, don't even know why books like this are categorised as sci-fi, yet another Dune-like fiasco. Couldn't engage with the story or any of the characters, finishing it felt kind of a chore.

I'm 40% through and finding it difficult to get immersed in the world-building. Reviews suggest the first book is the weakest in the trilogy, but I'm committed to finishing the series.

***The first book in the incredible New York Times bestselling series*** The Earth is dying. Darrow is a Red, a miner in the interior of Mars. His mission is to extract enough precious elements to one day tame the surface of the planet and allow humans to live on it. The Reds are humanity's last hope. Or so it appears, until the day Darrow discovers it's all al lie. That Mars has been habitable - and inhabited - for generations, by a class of people calling themselves the Golds. A class of people who look down on Darrow and his fellows as slave labour, to be exploited and worked to death without a second thought. Until the day that Darrow, with the help of a mysterious group of rebels, disguises himself as a Gold and infiltrates their command school, intent on taking down his oppressors from the inside. But the command school is a battlefield - and Darrow isn't the only student with an agenda. Break the chains. Live for more.

suuuper cool, worldbuilding is super vivid, the painful scenes really make you Feel that shit. woah when he lashed himself as punishment for another guy

Absolutely loved this story. The characters, the plot, the set up for future books. Fantastic.

Feels like Hunger Games for adults and a bit cliché (the chosen one, the revolution...). Besides that it is extremely entertaining.

Darrow is a Helldiver. A pioneer of Mars.

Born to slave beneath the earth so that one day, future generations might live above it.

He is a Red - humankind's lowest caste. But he has something the Golds - the ruthless ruling class - will never understand.

He has a wife he worships, a family who give him strength. He has love.

And when they take that from him, all that remains is revenge . . .

This was absolutely brilliant, and I loved how easy it was to follow and the world building wasn’t too heavy.

This was reminiscent of Dungeon Crawler Carl for me, which made it an instant hit. A little bit slow to get started, but once it did it had me gripped. In the second book I see more explanation and detail that would've been nice in the first, but otherwise a decent tale.

I always feel nervous going into a book with a lot of hype around it, but I definitely get the appeal of this one. The world building is very compelling, and I really appreciated the level of thought put into this stratified society (compared to other novels with a similar premise). There were some solid twists that I didn't see coming. If I had to nitpick, I think there were moments or certain characters that I felt could have been better developed or didn't feel as grounded, but I can also appreciate that this is only the first book in the series. Overall, I'm pretty excited to see where this series is going.
