The deities you call aren't always the ones who answer. Marlow needs to believe she's crazy. The alternative would mean embracing the gift--or curse--shared by her mother and grandmother: she can see angels and demons, including a dark and haunting entity who's been with Marlow her entire life. At least, she believes that's all he is until a fae from the Nordic pantheon strolls into her life and informs her that she's been sharing a bed with the Prince of Hell. A Prince who's now gone missing. Before she knows it, Marlow is deeply entangled in a centuries-old war, stumbling straight into a battleground between mighty beings of myth and legend from powerful pantheons around the world. And who will come out on top may just depend on her and the love she never dared to believe in.

I read this only because I enjoy the author’s online videos about mythology. I’m currently trying to find a late night bookstore to buy book 2. 

This mythical story looks at our concepts of religion, religious trauma, mental illness, and how people cope while having me laugh out loud, gasp, and kicking my feet.

Piper CJ does it again. The first 15% of this book was a rough read to get through just because I found Marlow incredibly cringing and wasn't sure I was going to be able to get through it but as the plot unfurled I couldn't stop. The plot takes points explored before by other authors but in a new light. Multiple reincarnations with all different religions and gods interspersed. I will say Fauna and Az are my favorite characters in this book and saved it really for me. Marlow is almost unbearable to the point where I almost don't want to read more but I understand she has some development to go through. She's human reacting in a very human way to her whole world being turned upside down, still doesn't make me like her more. All that being said, I can't wait to see what happens in the next book and how she tackles the things she only previously thought were fiction and myths.

There's alot that I didn't like about The deer and the dragon but I'll be honest when I say that the author created an interesting world and a fairly good story and with better writing this book would have been great. This story follows Marlow, a successful author who believes she's crazy for seeing a demon her whole life. But when the demon—Caliban—turns out to be the prince of hell goes missing, Marlow makes it her quest to get him back

This would have made for a good story but the characters are already together at the start of the book and the spend the most of it apart so the readers don't get time to know these characters let alone care about their relationship. The author plays is as the prince of hell is a mysterious character but it's just to hide that she doesn't develop any of the characters properly

The only character we really get to know is Marlow and let me just say that she is insufferable. Marlow is whiney and unlikable and most of this book is spent in her head as she does mundane tasks and either complains or over indulges herself. Marlow doesn't actually do anything as a main character though. I get that she isn't a fighter but she isn't clever or witty like how some characters are. She fails at the most crucial times and someone always needs to save her

For the most part I enjoyed reading this book despite my many complaints but the ending is the part that really spoiled it for me. There's a battle at the end and Marlow isn't even present for most of it, there's a uncomfortable spicy scene between Marlow and the demon prince while she is drugged—not by Caliban—and obviously can't consent and then the book ends with her crying ... in a shower. I'm undecided if I'll read the next book but it's likely that I won't because this books ending really ruined the story for me

fun and sexy read that felt like grown up Percy Jackson. I can’t wait for the rest of them!
