Kurson deserves some applause for finding the story. Any other writer who would've told this story could've written a book as good as this one. The writing and the story telling is ok but nothing to have high expectations about. I'm giving it 3.5 rounded down because I feel Kurson could've written this better. 

I wouldn't say that this has great literature in it but rather a shallow account of piracy, focusing on the treasure hunt and Mattera's and Chatterton's story. Many of the descriptions I feel have been dumbed down and lack a thorough account of the history and details. For example, the book has great space for discussing the economics of piracy but shallowly describes this only to speak about what matters to understanding why Bannister turned pirate for no reason.

Having said this, the book is exciting and gives you an insider's look to pirate life in the golden age of piracy circa 17th century. All without academic parlance. This is particularly exciting when hearing about the feasts of Josephn Bannister, the estimeed navy captain turned pirate for no apparent reason.

The one thing that set this book apart is the livelihood and energy of John Chatterton and John Mattera. Both near retirement age and pushing hard for stuff they find worthwhile. 

I'd like to be more like them and focus less on trivial and material things rather than experiences that mark your life. These two dudes spent their life's savings for goals that made them free. That justified their existence and made them feel more connected to life and focus on stuff that's really important to them and not what you're mostly told to focus on.
