Overall, I LOVED this book. It reminds me so much of the video game Dead Space, which I loved once upon a time for its macabre horror. Despite loving this book for what it was, I couldn't give it 5 stars for one huge reason. We never find out HOW human beings grew giant tentacles and the ability to slice metal with their screams. How did the crew of the USS John Muir turn into such deadly, bloodthirsty monsters? It was slightly referenced, but it was never fully explored. I wanted more exploration than that. I get the author's purpose for writing the book was exploring the evolution of humanity and the horror aspect was more of a subplot, but a huge opportunity to make the terror in this book a heavier element was missed here. Beyond that, I found the book fun and gripping. I loved Tuck and Laura, they were such vivid and well-developed characters. I saw someone else complain that they didn't involve the adults, even when they should have, and I think it needs to be pointed out that Laura TRIED to get her parents' help and she was not only rejected, but also basically put on house arrest. Given the circumstances, I can forgive her for going off and doing things on her own.
