I just finished reading this duology back to back (the first I read last year and have been desperatly waiting for the second) and all I can say is wow. Incredible stories! Amazing characters (with seamless queer and non-binary representation). A magical world that has incredible depths and cultures.

Brief review: (written on June 6th 2021)

I haven't written a review for Shadowscent but I found the perfume magic elements pretty fresh and fun to read about (if a bit predictable). So I was initially a bit divided whether to continue the series as I'm personally outgrowing from YA but since I wanted to find out what happens after the cliffhanger I reluctantly picked this up.

Several things about the sequl really bothered me: too many POV's, regression to cliche YA, and last but not least even the more original aspects from Shadowscent is being watered down. Had Shadowscent not end with a cliffhanger, it could had been a decent standalone. To me, the bulk of Crown of Smoke felt redundant.
