People assume that the shutting-up made her smaller. But locking yourself up can be a way to shrink the castle down to your size, and to expand your body toward the wider limits of the walls, until you are rooted at the foundation, see sideways out the glass, and do your highest thinking with the smoke that leaves the chimney. And still, through the window, you can send out sweets. Emily did not show her face to the children, only the hands and arms that set down the poems. What if she wanted simply to reveal, and not to be exposed? What counts as hiding, and what counts as devoted contemplation?

The priests are kissing books constantly, with wet, juicy, open mouthed kisses. This is the only part of the ceremony I understand.

When the patriarch of your family is a priest, it can be difficult to tell what is church and what is not.

Usually publishing a poem is like puking in space, or growing an adolescent mustache—no one really notices, and it might be better that way.

Unfortunately this was not for me and it bums me out because I was really looking forward to it. I agree with the other low rated reviews on here that there didn’t seem to be much of a story and though her writing was great, it seemed smug at times and turned me off. Also I didn’t get laugh out loud funny from this at all.

Had no previous knowledge of the author before buying this book, and I almost didn't because I assumed I kind of wouldn't enjoy a memoir. So glad I didn't miss out on all the belly laughs.

This may be my favorite sentence in all of writing. 

What makes that sentence good is what makes the whole book good: a comical situation described in the evocative language of a poet. The contradiction that that creates is delightful. And really, it's the larger contradictions that draw you in and hold you. That a priest is married and has lots of children. That a priest likes to play down and dirty metal-hair-band-esque licks on the electric guitar. That a priest would blow his child's college funds for a guitar pre-owned by a rock legend, and truly believe that it couldn't be helped. 

That last situation occurs at the start of the book, when everything is still very very funny. But it does presage a seriousness that takes hold 2/3 of the way through the book. The recounting of childhood experiences become more lonesome, the view of her parents' world becomes bleaker. You can really feel the despair of the author as she sees her father act incredibly selfishly towards her mother, towards her siblings, really towards anyone who isn't a priest. He clearly is the most important person in the family, knows it, and acts accordingly. 

The change from hilarious to bitingly sad is disappointing because I was having such a good time - I love to laugh. It's also disappointing on purpose, because the author wants us to feel how it was to go back into that toxic environment as an adult, to relive with her the memories in their proper context. The journey is a good one, go ahead and take it.

did i  not review this book already?? have now re-read - funny, witty, I dont know if I have ever related so much to someone's thought process, or if someone has made their thoughts/brain so explicit to me before. either way makes me both feel seen but also helps me somehow relax my brain? ease into thoughts, overthinking in a way that helps me not? not sure how to explain, I'm sure patricia lockwood would be able to articulate . also at surface level it just made me laugh and she writes about interesting topics

DNF at 60 percent. I enjoyed the writing but the narrative slowed and the writing wasn’t enough to carry me through to the end.

This book is both highly implausible and so genuinely relatable. It has strong similarities to some of John Irving’s classics, but with new vigour. It’s been a while since I snort-laughed through a book, so it’s not recommended plane reading.

I liked it but I also felt like it was a book that's too pleased with itself. Smug maybe? Like it was very "here are my jokes, look how funny they are." It was fine.

I will admit that like many, the cover and title really turned me off when Priestdaddy was a Book of the Month selection. However, its appearance on best reads of 2017 lists made me inclined to pick it up and give it a try even though I cringed every time I told someone what I was reading. I was really surprised with how much I like this book. It reads much more like a series of essays than a continuous memoir, and I agree with reviews that have pointed out it's disjointed. But Lockwood's writing style is witty and poetic, and I laughed out loud at several points (a rarity for me when reading books). Priestdaddy is a book I want to own and underline and read passages again and again.
