In Amulet 5: Prince of the Elves by Kazu Kibuishi starts in the aftermath of Max's betray in The Last Council. This time we get to learn more about the Elf Prince — his history and his current motivations.

Along with learning the Elf Prince's history, there's plenty of backstory on the stones themselves. We learn how they work and the dangers of being a stonekeeper. Both are shown through a combination of flashbacks and time travel. The action is fast paced and the plot, satisfyingly complex.

In the early volumes, I wasn't sold on the artwork. The story has always been solid but the artwork left me cold in places. That's changed. This volume is chockful of vibrant and beautiful vistas that both celebrate and enhance the story. As I was reading the egalley, I stopped in a number of places just to show my husband how gorgeous the book is.

I loved book five just as much as I liked the last volumes. This book picks up right after the fourth and provides a lot of back story. This back story covers Max, a little on what started this big war, and a little more on the Amulets. I felt like this book centered more around Max and his back story, but I didn’t really mind that. Kibuishi’s artwork continues to amaze me, it’s just so beautiful. He does an amazing job of setting the perfect scene for the tone of the story, and I absolutely love all of the colors. Again, I would definitely recommend it.

This really got interesting, we got some answers to things from the previous volumes and I feel like our protagonists have a clearer quest now. It is definitely hotting up.
