P.S. I Miss You by Jen Petro-Roy is an epistolary middle grade novel. Evie is writing to her sixteen year old sister who has been sent away because she got pregnant. The family is strictly Catholic. Since she's writing traditional letters it reads like historical fiction but I don't recall a time period being overtly stated.

If you only pick up one middle-grade book, make sure it’s this one. I have not been so moved by a book since I first read Ann Brashares’ The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. That book taught me the meaning of friendship, and this one taught me the meaning of strength. Reading Evie’s heartfelt letters to her sister shattered and repaired my heart countless times. Her confusion, frustration, and innocence were raw and real. All I wanted to do was give her a hug; I still wish I could.

The characters that Jen Petro-Roy has created are truly unforgettable. Evie, June, and Cilla will be with me for a very long time. I know I will be thinking of them for many years to come. Evie’s questioning and eventual pride of her sexuality were empowering beyond words. As a gay woman, I understood her struggle, and Petro-Roy portrayed her experience with all of the accuracy and respect that it deserved. I will be forever grateful that this book is available to anyone and everyone who may be struggling with their sexuality. It may not have existed when I needed it, but what matters is that it exists now. 

This author deserves all of the praise that the world has to offer for producing such a profoundly moving and magnificent work of literature. Whether you are a kid, a teen, or an adult, I recommend this book to you. To put it simply, it is a gift. Cherish it, embrace it, and let its words seep into your soul.

Want to read an extremely well written book about some seriously emotionally abusive parents and the children they fail? This book is dark, and hit me deep to my core. I thought we had moved on from "sending girls away" when they get pregnant but this was a stark reminder that this still happens.
