Dorohedoro 1

ドロヘドロ 1

A blood-spattered battle between diabolical sorcerers and the monsters they created. R to L (Japanese Style). Caiman was not lucky. A sorcerer cursed him with a reptile head and left him with no memory of his life before the transformation. Adding to the mystery, there's a specter of a man living inside him. But Caiman has one key advantage: he's now completely immune to magic. Along with his best friend, Nikaido, Caiman is hunting down sorcerers in the Hole, searching for the one who can undo his curse and killing the rest. But when En, the head Sorcerer, of the sorcerers, gets word of a lizard-man slaughtering sorcerers, he sends a crew of "cleaners" into the Hole, igniting a war between two worlds.

Dorohedoro, Vol. 1

4/5

I'm actually enjoying this more than I expected, so far. The art style is unique, raw and bizarre, a bit rough and gritty but it suits the world so well, which is apocalyptic with grimy set up. The violence is very explicit and gory, with squashed eyeballs and brains flying, but in a very comical way. From what I've seen so far, the setting is quite original, a bit darker in some ways but the comedy is very present. Actually, I'm liking the humor so much. The comedy is not trying hard, it just comes naturally.

I'm looking forward to my reading experience with this series. I really hope I'll enjoy this because this first volume is very solid.

You have to go into this by accepting everything as fact and not questioning anything. It gets better with each volume.

Q. Hayashida's creativity is incredibly impressive but what always has me in awe is her intense art style. The illustrations are so dynamic that the gore and violence blend seamlessly into the gritty world of the story.

Style over substance, but still a cool place to waste time. The notable artistic bit is the equivalence of the main antagonists and protagonists: everyone is a remorseless murderer, but with funny foibles and soft hearts.
