Quiet Girl in a Noisy World An Introvert's Story

Debbie Tung — 2017
Sweet, funny, and quietly poignant, Debbie Tung's comics reveal the ups and downs of coming of age as an introvert. This illustrated gift book of short comics illuminates author Debbie Tung's experience as an introvert in an extrovert's world. Presented in a loose narrative style that can be read front to back or dipped into at one's leisure, the book spans three years of Debbie's life, from the end of college to the present day. In these early years of adulthood, Debbie slowly but finally discovers there is a name for her lifelong need to be alone: she's an introvert. The first half of the book traces Debbie's final year in college: socializing with peers, dating, falling in love (with an extrovert!), moving in, getting married, meeting new people, and simply trying to fit in. The second half looks at her life after graduation: finding a job, learning to live with her new husband, trying to understand social obligations when it comes to the in-laws, and navigating office life. Ultimately, Quiet Girl sends a positive, pro-introvert message: our heroine learns to embrace her introversion and finds ways to thrive in the world while fulfilling her need for quiet.

it's light and [very] relatable introvert girl's story based on everyday life. not that funny. maybe boring for the extroverts. but as an introvert, i enjoyed reading this comic. i felt understood. oh and it made me envy debbie so much that she found her extrovert soulmate who completed her. i wish i can find mine soon.

I have been following Tung's Facebook page for a while, and her comic strips evoke a strong feeling of deja vu. Her book is a quiet reflection on her struggles as an introvert, and her quieter ways to overcome it all. Overcoming doesn't mean that she succumbs to societal pressures. Instead, she finds her own sacred spot where she can be herself, and stops trying to be what she is not. This is quietly inspiring, for the world presses on the phantom need to stay connected. PS: I wilfully used the word 'quiet' too many times. :)

I loved this book so much that I immediately mailed the author after reading it. I must admit it was a mushy email, but worth it. I have read a lot of comic books, but none has been so close to my heart as this one. Debbie has represented, with an accuracy that is simultaneously heartbreaking and heartwarming, the introverts and what goes on in their mind. The whole depiction is realistic and so ordinary, I am surprised at how much it has a recall value! My favorite bit is how her journey gives an account of how she figured it out. It gives out hope! (and so does her relationship with Jason) I couldn't have kicked off my year with a better book!

** spoiler alert ** I started this little illustration book by a recommendation of a friend who knows me. Because almost all illustrations and feelings were a reflection of my life and my inner self. Once you find out that you’re a chronic introvert, you start to accept yourself. I felt frustrated trying to fit into the extrovert people’s life since I couldn’t. And this book is a story of an introvert’s discovery of herself. I found myself a lot and this gave me the comfortability by knowing that I’m not alone.

From this moment forward, whenever anyone says, ā€œTell me about yourself!ā€ - I’m just going to hand them a copy of this book.

I grabbed Quiet Girl in a Noisy World from Netgalley thinking it would be another collection of silly comics without a lot of substance (which isn't a bad thing), but this one was a bit more poignant than expected. There's still a lot of one shots meant for laughing at, but Tung portrays well the challenges of being an introvert in a world that really wants you to hustle and be loud. It's not all funny, and sometimes one's shyness and need for alone time can really botch up your life. Plus making phone calls really is the devil! A short, but impactful read for the people in your life that just want to stay at home and be quiet most of the time.

ā€œIt’s perfectly fine to prefer thinking to talking.ā€ This book is just what I needed. And I’m sure you’ll love it as much as I do.

Loved it. So relatable. Like Sarah Andersen comics, but a bit less silly. I think the strength of this book is normalizing introvert tendencies and legitimizing their feelings in a busy and loud world.

*3.5 āļø This was an adorable, painfully relatable comic memoir all about the ups and downs of introversion. I loved the art style so much. It’s so cute and simple and absolutely perfect for the narrative. While I don’t think it’s the most interesting comic, I’d highly recommend it to any introverts out there looking for someone to understand them, even just for thirty minutes.

I enjoyed this as much as Book Love. Also, this reminds me of the time I won a "most behaved" award in grade school, only because I was too quiet.

I'm not a 100% introvert, but mostly I am on the inside, so I understood a lot of the things the author was talking about. I think it's a good comic about self-acceptance and love for yourself.
